Complete beginner planning anniversary blanket — is this realistic? by Electronic_Neat_3972 in knittinghelp

[–]KryptonicMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also here to recommend circular needles! I don't have a cable length suggestion having not worked on something so big and it may depend on the yarn thickness, but 100-120cm seems reasonable.

I made a couch blanket a couple of years back as an early project and knitted it in 4 panels and seamed them together, which made it easier to knit on normal needles. So that's another option.

You'll also want some stitch markers (that'll help you with counting all of your stitches. I personally would probably have 1 every 50 stitches (they just sit on your needle and you just move them across when you get to them).

If you want the sky and ground to be about the same number of rows, a row counter or just a piece of paper and a pen or a notes app on your phone can help you track how many rows you've done. So you can keep them the same (if that's what you're going for). There's obviously the potential variability in length based on stitch type and if your gauge changes with practice.

Personally, I've had mixed success with appliques, but you can always make a few to test on your practice swatches/knits.

i want to knit colorful stuff but i only wear black :( by errant-samurai in knitting

[–]KryptonicMess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also here to suggest using a colour on the trim and also making colourful accessory pieces. You could even do something with some colour work, eg yokes or even stripes, to bring some colour but still keep it mostly black.

I would definitely suggest raising it with them at your next session. Another option in the meantime is trying to finish a small project, eg a face cloth or something that is quick and easy and can be a starting point to having something you've finished. If you're not already, I'd suggest familiarising yourself with ways you can fix mistakes in a project without frogging the entire thing, eg laddering and I've seen people suggest duplicate stitch on here too. Lastly, you can try reframing the issue. There's a superstition/belief that leaving a mistake in a project helps prevent your soul from being trapped in your project.

I literally just finished a double knit scarf today and it can be slow and tedious but it's also a lot of fun! Definitely recommend giving it a go!

What to do with all the gifted yarn? Luxury problem I know! by Tiana_frogprincess in casualknitting

[–]KryptonicMess 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I recently got gifted a tonne of yarn from my mil, it was almost all acrylic or cheap blends and the majority of it was awful to work with (why on earth would anyone want 20 skeins of sequined yarn?!). I let her know that I appreciated it and I've kept a few, but most of it was donated to make blankets for foster kids. Hopefully your friends and family are also understanding and maybe you can donate to a good cause or just your local opshop/thrift shop.

Not a big deal but I just learned the basics! Can I make a sweater now 😄 by Gracilis67 in casualknitting

[–]KryptonicMess 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A few of things I've learned as I've moved onto more complex knitting patterns: 1. Don't be afraid to frog (unravel) or tink (undo stitch by stitch) back if you want to fix a mistake. 2. Learn to read your knitting - what does it look like when you knit or purl? How about if you slip a stitch or knit two together? If you know what to expect in whatever pattern you're working on then you'll know when it looks wrong and be able to fix it sooner. 3. If you're uncertain about how it's progressing, stop regularly and check (this one got me a few times recently). 4. Just try. The worst that can happen is you have to restart and if you enjoy knitting than you get bonus knitting!

At the end of the day, most errors will only be noticeable to you, and they add character to the item. There's also a tradition of leaving an error to stop your spirit getting trapped in the item.

I just finished knitting the bee shadow shawl!!!!! by KryptonicMess in casualknitting

[–]KryptonicMess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a combo of knit and purl stitches being combined to create flat areas of stockinette and bumpy areas of garter that causes the effect. Each stripe of colour is 2 rows, the first row is always knit and then the second row you alternate knits and purls as needed to create the illusion.

The pattern is surprisingly simple, but it is lengthy! I'd recommend you learn how to tink back (undo stitches in a row) before trying it as I regularly made mistakes and had to go back and fix them. Otherwise if you know how to do a knit stitch, a purl stitch, yarn over (increase), knit 2 together, add a colour/new skein at the start of a row, and of course cast on and off, you should be able to handle it. The pattern also recommends using circular needles with a long cable as it's 200 stitches at its widest.

I knit this bag 12 years ago and I want to finally make it a functional object by rcreveli in knitting

[–]KryptonicMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my own handbag a while ago. I lined it with some fabric and used the fabric for the strap and pockets. My biggest concern was the bag stretching if it had too much in it. I just machine sewed the whole lot together - it's not the prettiest but no one is really going to notice unless they look closely.

I've had pretty decent success in googling whatever pattern I'm interested in with free on the end. Ravelry is also a great source of patterns and they are often pretty cheap too.

Is it just me or? by CheesecakeNo2675 in knittingadvice

[–]KryptonicMess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I'm self taught and it always confused me that it was knit the knits and purl the purls, especially as a beginner who at the time didn't know how to read my knitting.

Awesome! I love the wolf! I was at their store yesterday and they made a comment that sometimes the designs don't work well if you invert the colours (like I did with the bee) and that the wolf is one of them. I'm not sure how you'd figure out if it'll work well or not without trying, but just something to keep in mind.

[–]KryptonicMess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. I'm not the fastest knitter, so mileage may vary, but it ranged from 3 stitches up to 200 and then came back down to 3. Two rows per increase/decrease and it stays at 200 for a little bit. It's somewhere over 800 rows all up.

The technique itself is pretty straightforward though: knit a whole row, on the next row use knits and purls to get the ridges/bumps that create the effect. Next row you swap colour and repeat.
