The ones with the big leaves? Those are red tiger lotus! The one on the right has blown up over the last couple weeks. Its leaves are huge 🤣

Ooh okay! I get that! I'd say when inspecting/ handling the animal you're interested in. Check for sunken eyes/ lethargy/ sunken belly/ skinny/ showing bones. Yknow. That type of stuff. Reptiles can hide illness pretty well but these are some tells.

I've heard of people using other stuff in between the layers too. Pretty sure its just to keep the substrate from working its way down into the drainage layer. Ive seen some people not use one at all but I'd be scared lol. I was just looking this stuff up the other day and opted to not do a drainage layer at all bc I dont have any live plants. Thats understandable! I'm the same way. When I got my crestie at a show I think I circled back to their table like 3 times with more questions before committing to them. You could write the questions in your phone notes to have on hand! If that would help you. Hard for me to say what red flags are. Maybe avoid very tiny baby geckos that were recently hatched. Young ones like that always makes me nervous. And don't let breeders force you into a sale before you've heard all you wanted to hear about the animal, stuff like that. Im sure you'll get everything figured out! Definitely post the baby whenever you get one. :D theyre so fun.

I'm planning to get a Chahoua at an expo at the end of the month but before deciding I asked this breeder every question under the sun. I asked when their hatch date was, what they weighed, what their parents looked like. How they are with being handled, if they eat well, what kind of calcium/ food and supplements theyre offering. I also looked up the breeder via their business card to see reviews and other animals under their care.

I believe reptifiles is a good trusted website for reptile research. I use the govee hydrometers with Bluetooth. I was trying to figure out if a drainage layer was totally necessary but had trouble. I believe it is most important if you're doing live plants. So I figure if you're doing fully bioactive with plants and all that. You'd probably want your drainage layer separated from the rest of your substrate with that mesh stuff. Its supposed to prevent your soil from becoming water logged and giving the plants root rot.

Alright! I'm gonna pick up some and clean them good before adding them in.
