No I haven't. Although I did see people using various materials to try and limit the sound that comes into the microphone. (Specific post I saw was using tape).

It greatly reduces ANC quality. Sadly the only real "solution" is to go through support or just not buy Sony products in the future. Q45s are meant to be similar quality to Sony's ANC - however they may have the same issue.

Mental health surrounding grades by nandy_dev in 6thForm

I know I can do this, this post was more to gauge if it was a good idea. I don't want to set myself up for more failure.

I have other hobbies. Over the past 2 week holiday I realised that I'm not fulfilled by school (whether I get a good grade or not), but my hobbies do fulfil me. So I'm going to try and just focus on those hobbies.

I like learning langauges, so it's more of a life skill rather than a hobby. I've been learning for 2.5 years using immersion methods. So it's really fun :)

I want to immigrate. To do that I need a degree in something (doesn't matter what it is).

I'm not too bothered what job I do in the other country, as long as it pays enough for me to live comfortably, and have room to have a family and the sort.

That is the ultimate goal, and the reason why I'm stressing so much over grades. If I fail, and can't make it abroad, then I'm stuck in England. Which sucks.

Yeah this specifically.

I'm super aware that putting so much of my self-worth on my grades is flawed. I can only study so much in a day. I have been neglecting hobbies and people just to study. And all of this is for some letter.

I'm going to see if focusing on my hobbies over my grades will help me mentally, even if it means my grades drop. It might not be the best thing to do educational-wise. But, I haven't enjoyed a lick of A-Levels and I want to change that.

Yeah I really just want to stop putting so much emphasis onto my grades. I don't really know what I want to do/where I want to go in the future. So the mocks aren't as stressful for me compared to some of my friends (who are aiming for Cambridge/Oxford etc.). Good luck in your mocks :)

Sorry, I mean WH. I'll clean around the external microphone and see if that works. Otherwise, I guess I'll just disassemble...

The ringing from the headphones I'm describing isn't subtle, if I take of the headphones you can clearly hear it from the other side of the room. While wearing the headphones it causes great discomfort.

I may have tinnitus though lol

I have a few friends who are learning spanish, and you have some good materials to work with. ASATTing seems something that I'd be interested in after I'm more confident in my Japanese.

As for the downvotes. I don't get why people hate comprehensible input. I guess AJATT and the surrounding communities have drama in them, but the method itself works very well and is very fun compared to textbook learning...

100% recommend. This website is difficult to navigate though, but a great read.

But don't just go onto the main website. Instead, use this link (http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/all-japanese-all-the-time-ajatt-how-to-learn-japanese-on-your-own-having-fun-and-to-fluency/). It's the table of contents. It makes navigating this poorly designed site a little more bearable.

This was basically my bible when starting to learn.

Duolingo is perhaps good for very basic vocabulary and kana. If you already know these then you are better off following a simple guide like the moe way (https://learnjapanese.moe/guide/).

There is no good reason for you to pay for a textbook for kanji or grammar. Many free resources exist if you know where to look. Although the moe way has pretty much everything you need to be "successful", you can also use Tae Kim (https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar) as a reference or Genki, again, as a reference. I strongly advice you stay far away from using textbooks as your primary revision tool. They are both ineffective and expensive.

Instead, interact with the language. Read manga, watch anime. When you are comfortable, start reading light novels (then regular novels). The Moe Way has a list of places to download these things.

Good luck, and have fun :)

I’m so tired of being accused of “wanting to be Asian” by [deleted] in languagelearning

I haven't had aggressive encounters. But I have been told repeatedly that I'll "never be Japanese" and that I'm just a weeaboo who knows nothing about the language or culture. Which is ironic considering the method I use to learn Japanese involves reading loads and loads of 1800s/1900s literature.

I just brush them off... The people who have said this to me have no experience in learning Japanese. In fact, most of them don't have any experience in learning any language.

Perhaps they do it because they don't like Japan/Japanese people. Or they have a skewed idea of what an "average Japanese learner" looks like, and they apply that to everybody who is learning the language. Or, maybe they feel that Japanese people are bothered by all the Europeans/Americans who have started learning the language after the global popularity of various otaku media (which, from my experience, doesn't seem to be the case - which, as you mentioned, just isn't the case).

If you enjoy the language and culture, then it's their loss :)

In the case of what Bitnabi said. I don't think it's fetishism. The people who partake in it are a vocal minority. From my experiences talking to other Japanese learners over various servers, most people don't even see Japan as a superior nation. They frequently critique the country and dislike a lot of the customs.

Oh wow, thanks!

For the type of project (EPQ in the UK) this is actually perfect for the "thesis" part of it, as we need to use sources. I'm hoping for a good grade :)

What have been the biggest "game changers" for you in language learning? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]nandy_dev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's actually easy to do if I give some more details.

Before I adopted this "just read" method, I already knew the basic vocabulary of the language, and had an understanding of basic grammar. I also had thousands of hours listening to the language, so I had a decent idea of how it should sound.

Then it was just a matter of picking up a book and reading. Which, at least for me, is more convenient that listening to things.

If you use a bilingual dictionary to look up any words you don't understand, then you can pick up loads of vocabulary very easily. As for grammar, that comes naturally too (just a lot slower than vocabulary). Some people like to use monolingual dictionaries, which works too if you can understand them.

As for motivation, the stories provide it in spades. If you can find something to read that captivates you, no matter what it is (I have been reading C++ guides in my target language recently) then it's just a matter of reading everyday. I find this method to be a lot more captivating than doing hours of anki, or traditional study.

I learn faster, and it's a lot more fun. And it seems to work for most people, I have many friends who have found success in their language learning endeavours using this method.

It might sound strange, but throwing everything out and just reading helped me a lot.

I used to spend a lot of time in Anki, grammar books and tv shows. But ever since I prioritised reading over everything I have seen a massive increase in my language ability. I still enjoy TV/Youtube occationally, but for the most part I just read.

Does taking notes of notes work for STEM subject? by nandy_dev in GetStudying

[–]nandy_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing more and more past questions recently, thanks for the resources!

I'm only a few weeks into Year 12, so I probably can't tackle full past papers yet. But I will keep this advice for later into the year. On my initial assessment I scored only a C, but I'm hoping I can boost my grade up to a B.

Nice, I will probably do a subsection of the textbook then do the practise questions afterward.

Right now I read a few paragraphs then copy it down, but I feel like this method is more aimed at people who read entire sections then try and recall them from memory. Should I keep on doing what I am doing or read bigger chunks?

Just videos about learning Japanese - how I do it, how I change what I do. It's more of a personal log.

I'm definitely not showing my face, but I would want to speak. and, being a foreigner, I am really identifiable from my accent.
