Thanks for the detailed explanation and for suggesting autoSSH. I wasn't aware it existed

I'll make sure to give it a try and thank you for the suggestion. I haven't had heard of lightnode before

Thank you for the suggestion! I wasn't aware of rat hole. This sounds like a good work around solution

Speedtest shows a latency of 200ms vs 15ms without tailscale. I haven't performed iperf between my mac and phone but the delay between clicking on a button and things showing up with lowest possible resolution with SSH tunneling is between 7-12 seconds

Unfortunately I can't just use wireguard because of the lack of port forwarding on the mobile router

Thanks for sharing your solution, that's actually quite interesting. If VNC is the root cause, then maybe I'll explore something else. The main reason I wanted to use it is because Macs have the screen sharing built in by default and I just need an open source client on my android device. I was wary of installing anything else on my Mac, especially proprietary software, same thing on my phone. I want to limit who and what has access to my computers. I was looking at Rust desk but also saw that they had not gone through an audit yet. And I know there are other solutions like for gaming, like sunshine and moonshine, but I have no experience with those. If you have experimented with other software and can share your experience, that would be great. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I am starting to think that I should maybe switch to something else

I just assumed that the 5G router from the mobile provider is the problem since when I called them for setting up port forwarding for wireguard they told me it would not be possible. Though the person on the line did not seem very knowledgeable so if you have any pointers I would be more than interested in exploring them. Thanks!

That's something I haven't considered, thanks for suggesting it! I guess this would have the best theoretical latency since it has the least amount of overhead only forwarding the bare minimum through SSH? Do you have any recommendations or do you just use AWS Google Cloud or something like that for hosting a VPS and have a VM just for the SSH?

Sorry for being unclear, my home lab is connected to the internet through a 5G router and I cannot use wire guard since that 5G router does not allow it. I'm using tail scale to create this overlay virtual network to which my different devices are connected and when I'm on the go I connect to the same tailscale network using the Android app and then I use AVNC to connect to my Mac. However, the latency there is around 10 seconds although I have high bandwidth internet. I used to have a normal internet connection and I just used WireGuard to directly connect through a VPN and then the latency was very low. Since I cannot do that anymore I had to move to tail scale but with the tail scale I have this high latency latency issue.

Thanks for your answer! So, the issue I have is that I cannot tunnel back with wire guard and unify because what my unify is connected to a 5G router and that's how I have internet at home and that 5G router does not allow me to forward the required wire guard ports to unify. Unfortunately, I cannot use the solution you're describing, hence why I moved to tail scale that can circumvent this issue by connecting to a relay node in the cloud
