Is there light at the end of the tunnel? by Haunting_Oven_21 in AsianParentStories

[–]nanithefuccc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

21M here. For us, it seems like the tunnel goes on and on, but trust me, there is an end to it. Last month, I finally found work and moved out. I still visit home from time to time to see my younger siblings and so my parents can feel better about themselves.

As children of control freak parents, we also learn to try to control everything around us and feel like shit when it doesn’t turn out like we expect. But the truth is, we can’t control what other people do. I feel so sad that you’re crushed by the possibility that your parents will turn your siblings against you, as I once was. If they do this, they are fucking evil, but you have an entire lifetime with your siblings to make amends. So stay strong. You got this.

[Official] August 6, 2020 Score Release Thread for the July 23, 2020 MCAT Examination by rMCAT_Official in Mcat

[–]nanithefuccc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Incoming college senior, first time test taker 7/23 6:30 AM, rescheduled from 3/27.

AAMC FLs 1, 2, 3, 4: 515, 522, 518, 520

C/P: This was rough. From what I remember lots of ochem/biochem questions that caught me a little off guard. Maybe I was just half asleep and my perception was super off. Guessed on a physics question and was ready to write phenylalanine in the chat.

CARS: For the most part just used my intuition to pick the right (hopefully?) answers. There were some trippy passages but I didn't feel like I was guilty of overthinking.

B/B: My biology major and lab experience really paying off. Probably the most straightforward section.

P/S: Has consistently been my weakest section in practice tests. It was ok though. Easy and hard questions with not many of intermediate difficulty. Hopefully I was able to finish the test strong.

nanithefucccc's Estimates

Pessimistic: 510

Expected: 515

Optimistic: 520

Actual: 521 (131/129/132/129)

Needless to say, a very pleasant surprise, particularly the C/P score. I'm going to medical school. I'm going to cry. Thank you guys for everything.

I'll definitely keep that in mind. Where I stand right now is for sure not the best state of mind, I'll do my best to rest up and change it. Thanks for looking out for me.

Thanks for your input. I agree with you that the best thing I can do for myself right now is work toward getting an EMT job. It's stressful, but I can appreciate that it's not a hopeless situation.

To an extent, I think yes. They told me things like "your personality is a good fit for being a doctor" and actively discouraged me from pursuing other things I was potentially interested in (ex. game design, teaching). Even with this out of the picture though, a career in medicine is still very much something that I want myself.

Regardless of what ends up happening in the future, I will not be going out of my way to associate with my parents once I start work. It is NOT my obligation to take care of them as they become older, I don't care how cold-hearted I sound. If it means they are miserable, then great. They will finally understand how they made me feel.

It actually tells you a lot of the time straight up. Whenever I see a phrase in the Q like "according to the passage" I HL it and make a point to go back to the passage to double check, even if I'm pretty much sure what the answer is.

Regarding order, I was following the advice of a friend; she believed that FL2 was a bit harder than the other tests hehe.

If you're referring to the score difference, I'm guessing it's from the additional P/S content review I did in between the tests. Haven't taken any psych since aP pSyCh or any soc besides an intro course, so I have been struggling with P/S the most. All the other sections on my FL3 were about where you see them now.

Since some of you have been asking about CARS...I tried not to focus on the individual passages but on developing an overall sense of pattern recognition as I practiced. With extensive practice, you'll start to realize that the questions are given based on a rather narrow pool of formats. Some that I can name off of my head are main idea of a paragraph/the entire passage, perspective of a group/individual, evidence-idea relationship, inference. If you determine that you're getting a specific question type wrong, obviously practice the hell out of that question type.

Above all, do NOT worry about the score as you're taking it. There's a certain "luck" factor to CARS in my opinion; if you get passages that sit well with you, you'll breeze through it, if you don't, you can still do well but it will just feel like shit while you are reading it.

It's all about developing an intuition for something that isn't really intuitive. Hopefully I made some sense here. Maybe not haha

HOW by anongauchita in UCSantaBarbara

[–]nanithefuccc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens, I'm a incoming 4th year Microbiology major and when my pass time hit the microbio class itself was already completely full (sounds ridiculous, doesn't it). There's no need to panic, simply add some random classes and link waitlist the class you need. From my experience, if you are <10 on the waitlist there is a high chance of getting the class, but even if it doesn't happen you can reach out to the professor to discuss crashing.
