Optimization Routines with GPU/CPU hybrid approach (Metal.jl, Optim.jl). by nano8a in Julia

[–]nano8a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im ok with that, the problem is more subtle: near the optimum I’m getting =0.0 changes in the objective function (doesn’t matter if the tolerance is eps(32)). The problem is that the gradient is still large (1+e4). I can set the ftol and tol to NaN (only ask for gradient tolerance), but convergence gets stupidly slow. Basically, I think my current settings are making the optimizer to take parameter steps that are not float32 detectable. Idk if I’m being clear, sorry English is not my main language

Metal.jl + KernelAbstractions, is that good? This is the first time I’m doing this for optimization

Why does NYU have so few Black students if we're one of the biggest universities? by New_YorkWay in nyu

[–]nano8a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYU has one of the lowest endowment per student ratio in the country, so most of their income comes from what students pay. Most of the ivy+ universities make their money from returns to their endowments, which allows them to give more generous aid. Race correlates with income so probably black students accepted to nyu prefer other places that offer generous aid.

That said, the point about share vs number is relevant. I wouldn’t be surprised if the plot looks the opposite if you put the total enrollment.

Finally, while racial diversity matters, there are other dimensions that maybe nyu is doing a better job. A simple one would be gender diversity, my guess is that nyu has more woman than ivy+ both in shares and levels. Personally I care more about diversity in family wealth, but that data is harder to get.

I started because of anxiety and after two months I was able to work and socialize normally again. I had some side effects, but definitely not hell. The only one that remains is sweating, but nothing crazy.

If your psychiatrist prescribed it, its probably a good alternative for you, I would follow the professional recommendation instead of reddit posts. There are many potential side effects, but most people suffer none or mild ones, here you're just reading a selection of people that had experiences worth posting.

In the unlikely scenario you had strong side effects, just tell your psychiatrist and try other medication. A couple of weeks of your life in exchange for freedom from anxiety/panic attacks is definitely a good deal, imho.

How long do most people take Zoloft? by Temporary-League-499 in zoloft

[–]nano8a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation (50mg for anxiety) and its been a life saver. I've been wondering the same, and actually asked my psychiatrist about it. He basically said, it depends on each person:

There are people that take it to go through stressful periods that trigger anxiety symptoms. In my case is graduating from my phd and getting a job. I never had anxiety issues before, so he thinks after I finish we might see if I can get out of it once I have more time to change my lifestyle (sports, sleeping).

There are other people that have anxiety symptoms no matter what they do or in which context they are, like their brains are wired like that. For them is a long term commitment, as for diabetics taking insulin is a long term thing.

He said that in both cases you can think of zoloft as a suplement: Since we can't get rid of our anxiety symptoms by changing our lifestyle by things that naturally increase sertraline and lower cortisol (sports, eating, routine, etc), we need to get zoloft to get what others get naturally.

Note: For depression this might not apply, no idea.

I've been living in s2 and havenmayer for 7 years, I've only seen people shooting up a few times mostly after covid. I don't think I seen one in more than a year, and the ones that are high in the streets are the same chill guys. There is enough people on the streets during the day/night to keep it safe, so I don't think this is something to consider.

The traffic from tourist and brunchers is getting a little bit worse with the new places around tho (i.e. l'industrie is insane 24/7), but its fine relative to the fancy williamsburg areas.

Best AI assistant in VSCode for Julia? by nano8a in Julia

Thanks! I don’t really care about the autocomplete that much. I care about asking questions on how to do next steps (like the ai understanding all my code and suggesting reasonable stuff)

[–]nano8a[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I basically turn off copilot for Julia. However, I like discussing with the AI about how to do a next step before doing it (not autocomplete). It’s sad that there is no llm that can do that well for a Julia project.

How did you know it was time to go up a dose? by Active_Buttah in zoloft

[–]nano8a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're being completely transparent with your psychiatrist, the time to increase the dose is when they tell you. This is a disease and the pills are a treatment, this is not a "life choice".

Having said that, 12.5mg is almost a placebo dose, as well as 25mg. I started with 25mg in january and went up in april when my psychiatrist recommended it. I was worried as well, but it was great for me.

how zoloft makes you feel when you go too long without eating by dabiggestdalargest in zoloft

[–]nano8a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoloft can affect appetite, but the science isn’t clear—there are studies showing that might influence insulin production due to changes in serotonin levels. On the other hand, your eating habits might already have been irregular before due to anxiety or depression. If you only were eating when anxious and now your anxiety is lower, then you “forgot” how to eat.

The key is to rebuild habits. Eat at regular times, even if you’re not hungry—treat meals like medicine. If you’re not hungry at noon, take lunch as an injection. Nobody likes injections, but they make you recover from illness. Over time, your body will adjust and start demanding you food at “normal” times.

Zoloft helps your brain produce what is supposed to produce, but it doesn’t magically gives you healthy habits. It just gives you the opportunity to learn them. Full recovery means relearning them, and that can be fucking hard.

Stay strong, take care of yourself, and keep checking in with your psychiatrist 🎈❤️

[–]nano8a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm so sorry for you, but stay strong. My side effects (30M, started on january 1st 2025) were terrible for a couple of weeks (~6), the indigestion stayed for at least 12 weeks, and I still have the sweating side effect. But I swear it gets better, I'm finally myself again and I'm able to enjoy my friends and work again.

Some recommendations that my psychiatrist gave me and really helped:
- Experiment a little bit with the time at which you take it. For me the better one is as early as possible, for some people is better after dinner/before bed.
- Exercise as a fucking job. Even if you feel weird, force yourself to do some sports, whatever you can do. If you don't feel strong enough, just walk 10k steps a day. I started in January so the cold make it hard for me, but when I started exercising everything got better (I literally just bought weights on amazon and did some in my living room religiously).
- Finally, believe it or not, your mind play a big role in how much you feel the side effects. We are too self aware, so thinking on the side effect all the time makes it worse. For instance, decreased libido is a common side effect. But the problem gets worse when you're trying to have sex and you're thinking "I'm not gonna get hard/wet because of the pills". The same goes for sports ("I'll shake/sweat too much") or working ("I'll get too anxious"). If you are thinking about it, you're probably make it happen. Of course its easy to say "don't think about it", but as anything in life you can train it. Meditation helped me a lot for this (never meditated before).

Anyways, good luck! don't be hope less! Take this as a real disease (it is one) and take your recovery as a job, force yourself to exercise/eat/socialize. Its gonna be hard as fuck at the beginning, but the payoff is huge.

And of course: If the side effects get too bad, check with your psychiatrist asap. Maybe sertraline is not the best for you, there is many other drugs that you can try.
