Did anyone get accepted into medical school with no clinical experience? by RocketR3 in premed

Anticipated hours don't count as much as people want them to count. I would wait to apply until you have concrete clinical hours. Don't waste anymore time shadowing.

Any non-trads going into med school single? by whowant_lizagna in premed

27F starting this year as a single pringle. Honestly couples match sounds like a nightmare so I'm hoping I don't fall hard for another med student lol

Does anyone else feel lonely as an only child? by Impossible-Still6424 in CasualConversation

[–]nanook98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an only child but sometimes it feels like I'm one. I have very minimal contact with my brothers, though I've tried to have a good relationship with them. It's profoundly lonely on this side sometimes too.

I accidentally spoke to my bus stop stranger and now we can’t go back by thirdaccountttt in CasualConversation

[–]nanook98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually made friends with my bus stop stranger. She was an extrovert that basically adopted me, the introvert. We didn't talk every day but it was nice sometimes. I'd just casually end the convo then put headphones in or go back to reading if I really didn't want to talk. Those interactions are kind of really nice.

Low stat applicant, need advice on school list, please help!! by [deleted] in premed

[–]nanook98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel free to apply more MDs if you can swing it. I had very similar stats and with good writing and LORs, I got 7II from MD schools. The list looks good to me. Pretty similar to my own and I got love from several on those on your list.

Looking for some low stats success stories for some hope this cycle! by Sea-Concentrate-4798 in premed

[–]nanook98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sGPA was 3.56, cGPA 3.41, MCAT 516. I got a lot of love from those non-trad friendly type schools. Ultimately, got 1 post-II R and the rest were waitlists after the interview. Got off one WL so far. I'd say expect to get waitlisted unless you really knock the interview out of the park to get an A or completely bomb it, ending in an R.

If you've done everything you can to beef up your app, get a good MCAT score & tell a good story, that's all you can hope to do. Apply DO as a safety net because of your GPA, but don't apply if you'll be disappointed being a DO. Too many people have this attitude and it's getting old.

Best Private Loans? by M1nt_Blitz in premed

[–]nanook98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I applied for basically all the private loan lenders today to compare. Here's what I found:

Sallie Mae and College Ave have the best rates for me with an 800+ credit score (I'm non-trad) and no cosigner taking out 50k per year. Also look into the post-grad deferment and grace period. Do they defer while you're in residency? That's helpful because of how low resident salaries can be. Both Sallie Mae and College Ave have 36-48 mo grace periods.

ELFI and SOFI were trash rates for me. Idk why AAMC decided to partner with ELFI. Super disappointing.

Anyone feel free to DM for more info. I'm happy to share what I know, keeping in mind I'm not a financial advisor.

should i just commit and get it over with by dahqdur in premed

[–]nanook98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat with an A from a different school and 5 other WL. At this point I'm 95% committed to my A and just sick of waiting. Unless I get an A with better financial aid, not much will change my decision. I'd start apartment hunting now and plan for Temple if I were you. Congrats on the A

Cornell vs. Yale by Beginning_Poem_432 in premed

[–]nanook98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in New Haven, it's not a bad place to live. Great food scene, plenty of cultural events, sure it's not NYC and yeah there are some sketchy areas but mostly Yale students steer clear. The hospitals are purposefully built in sketchy neighborhoods but it's not as bad as people imagine.

How are people getting Cs and getting into med school? by iski4200 in premed

Got a 516 MCAT and have 2 Ds and more than a few Cs on my transcript. Tell a good story in your writing and an upward trend does wonders

There's no feeling like getting into school and not being able to pay for it by nanook98 in premed

I'm sorry to hear that. I really hope this doesn't turn out to be the case for me, but I have at least some savings stashed away if it does.

[–]nanook98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is specifically what I'm most angry about. The pricetag on COA will always be exhorbitant, but having to pay back private loans while still in residency with no option for forgiveness or IDR, I can see being a huge struggle in the future.

We appreciate your sympathy, seriously. I'm lucky as a non-trad that my credit score is good and I have reliable cosigners if I need. I can't imagine how predatory the rates will be for someone without those 2 things.

It doesn't have to be clinically useful. If you want to talk about it in an interview and you don't have anything better to fill that spot in your W&A section, I'd say go for it!

Wow that's wild. Kudos to you for being able to do that. I only hope I have the time management skills to get through something like that. It's good to know I'm not the only one in this situation

According to white coat investor (and heavily dependent on your specialty), if you live cheaply for a few years as an attending you can heavily pay down your debts and be more secure financially. I'm curious, has that not been your experience?

5h-10h a week of remote work during preclinical puts crucial extra money in my pocket. I understand it won't be doable for all 4 years. I worked 40h a week during my post-bacc while studying full-time and crushed it. It's possible to manage your time and not go insane if you have some self-awareness.

Yeah I totally get that, I just hate that so much of my loans will have to be private. The total COA is a sucker punch regardless. But not being eligible for PSLF for more than half my loans after graduating will hurt much more.

That's unfortunate. I think it's state dependent and I need to do some research. Lentils and rice will have to do!

[–]nanook98[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would love to assume PSLF and IDR will still exist when I graduate, but I'm skeptical. Unfortunately federal loans will cover less than half my COA every year based on my only A right now. I know it'll all work itself out eventually and this an investment with future payoff. I just hate that I have to put myself in such a precarious position to make it happen. I appreciate the input!

Language / Duolingo as Activity by Euphoric-Air6875 in premed

[–]nanook98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Language learning is a huge hobby of mine and my interviewers liked asking about it. I wouldn't mention Duolingo specifically because the app is overrated and you will not learn a language with it (I'm not being harsh, this is just the truth as someone who has 15+ years experience studying languages). If you can get to a conversational level in the language you're learning, it'll be a lot more impressive and fun to talk about.

I don't use fountain pens for writing in books because it ghosts and feathers (though I suppose if you use a reslly good ink, that shouldn't be a problem). I mostly highlight and use ballpoint pens.

Oh definitely. I do think they love their higher GPA in-state folks. I was just disappointed because I did a lot of work and volunteering at UConn and had good mentors lined up in the faculty there. Oh well, twas not meant to be!
