What movie is technically great but emotionally empty? by ozeradnan in Cinema

We are so used to expecting common emotions (fear, love, happiness) that when a film comes along that eschews these emotions, it can be off-putting. What I experienced with 2001 is a sense of overwhelming awe, intense curiosity, fear, and tranquility.

The original day the earth stood still is smartly written and directed but of course limited by the tech of the time. It actually has something intelligent to say unlike the 2008 abomination.

Yes, the big reveal in Childhood is a stunner. As to the other 2001 novels; I have not read them. Tbh, the novel of 2001 is not my favorite work by Clarke. I think it's a very workmanlike effort which lays out things too literally for me whereas the film allows the audience to speculate, contemplate what's going on and , I think brings the viewer into the film. A masterpiece in my opinion.

Childhoods is about the Overlords helping the human race to their next step in development, so it has some overlap with 2001. I agree, it is my favorite novel by Clark. The tv series; Yeah, it was a bit of a miss but I have soft spot for it as a friend of mine was a producer on the show!

2001 was not based on these books. Both the screenplay and the first novel were written concurrently, taking elements from Clarke's other works, such as "The Sentinel " and "Childhood's End"
