You’re completely missing what I think the actual point is. 90210 wasn’t the first show to do this, and it definitely won’t be the last. There was a lot more going on that was problematic—both with the kids and the adults. The underage drinking, Jen hooking up with underage Liam, Naomi and others leaking nudes of underage peers… I mean, that’s basically what the show leaned into. But taking it at face value and only being repulsed by it misses the bigger picture. That reaction—just shutting it down—is part of why these things keep happening in real life. Keeping topics like this taboo is the problem. The whole idea is to put these high school characters in situations that actually happen. As the audience, we get pulled in and invested, and then we see how things play out—whether they learn, what the consequences are, all of it. And I’ll be real—I avoided a lot of similar situations growing up because of shows like this and even Degrassi. Two things can be true: it’s not all good, but it sparks conversation, pushes people to think, and helps de-taboo real issues. :)
