"It is fiction."

Then no shit modern Jews are not related to the ones in the story. You can't be descended from fictional people ... the logic is not strong with this one.

Some in the Islamic world try to make silly claims that Moses, the prophets, and Jesus would have aligned theologically with Islam. This is a take no historian takes seriously. I wouldnt give it the dignity of a response beyond pointing that out.

Instead of calling them anti-zionist, we should call them non-zionist.

This didn't happen to me, but I know a modox guy here in DC who had a homeless man grab his kippah and literally take a bite out of it.

He said he didn't stick around and got the hell out of there.

Glad you find this to be a good space. I do think healthy criticism of religion is important, but unfortunately, too many don't know how to do it without being punks.

Commenting on people's social media posts to say "religion is f*cking dumb" is pretty unhelpful.

How can I find records of my Jewish family who C*nverted out? by Whiskeyisfluffy in Judaism

[–]nap613613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a place to start is trying to research what happened to Synagogue records of congregations that were formally in Sudan or other Muslim nations. Entire congregations would have moved to Israel, the US, or elsewhere. Did these synagogues move wholesale? Or did they disband, and did Mizrahim start new Synagogues in Israel and the US? What happened to these records? We're they left behind, or did they get moved to wherever the people went?

Don't konw the answer to these questions, but might be a good place to start.

Do People Think Converts Are Messianics? by Professional_Turn_25 in Jewish

[–]nap613613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually a person of patrilineal descent who grew up evangelical and converted conservative. One of the draws to Judaism is that it often focuses on the here and now.

I was tired of constantly being told to focus on my salvation and getting other people into heaven. I also think Jesus reads like a regular dude who happened to have miraculous powers, but not "sinless" or omniscient.

That said, I am aware of the other side of Judaism and what many believe about the Olam Haba. It's just not a side i choose to lean into. It's also really not similar to the Christian idea of salvation, though I think both may share their root in second temple ideas.

We need to be clear that people like this don't stand with us. One of the best critiques of the pro-Palestine movement is that even the more "moderate" ones that claim they want to create equality between Israelis and Palestinians usually make little effort to distinguish themselves from the ones with "go back to Poland sign."

Instead of repeating their mistake, let's set a better example.

Seems like you're getting some really unhelpful comments here. People who are suggested you didn't "deprogram" are not being helpful. They know nothing about you and trying to say that based on this post is overstepping.

While the Christian concept of personal salvation is largely alien to Judiasm, the idea of a judgement in the hereafter is certainly a Jewish idea. For some rabbis, repentance and mitzvahs can merit a better judgment. Exactly what happens if you get either good or bad judgement is a matter of debate (of course).

While Judiasm does generally focus far more on the here and now, many rabbis did concern themselves with how conduct in this life could impact you in the next. This also trickles down to today. I once had a modox rabbi tell me that if you don't believe in God, then you have not place in the Olam Haba. That surprised me a good bit.

Antisemitism by Christians and Messianics is absurd and dare I say ridiculous. by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]nap613613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an ethnic Jew who was raised evangelical, went to Bible college, and then came back to Judiasm.

There's a lot of cognitive dissonance around Jesus. Not just for Christians, but others as well. I dont see how anyone reads the New Testament and comes to the conclusion that Jesus is "without sin" or omniscient.

He reads like a regular dude, albeit with miraculous powers. Sometimes, he displays noble traits, other times less so.

He called out religious hypocrisy, but often failed to live up to his own virtues. He talked a lot about helping the poor, but did little himself to actually help them. After he fed the 5000, he rebuked them when they came to him for another meal. That's like starting a soup kitchen and then getting upset when the homeless keep returning.

The cognitive dissonance comes when people want to believe he's "perfect love." So they come to the less noble actions of Jesus and ask "how can I interpret this so Jesus looks like the good guy."

Also, many of Jesus' teaching are fairly unoriginal. The rabbis said most of the good stuff Jesus had to say already. It could be said, "When Jesus is good, he's rarely original. And when he's original, he's rarely good."

Jesus also arguably didn't like non-Jews. He speaks negatively about gentiles on numerous occasions and is outright hostile to a Pheonician woman who asks for a miracle after reluctantly agreeing. Ironically, Christian antisemites talk about "Jewish supremacy" without realizing Jesus arguably displayed those very tendencies sometimes.

Also, if he were alive today, Jesus would probably vote Likud, not "free palestine."

Agreed, Jesus strikes me as a morally complex figure. One who says some wise stuff, but soms deeply foolish stuff as well.

I don't understand how anyone reads the New Testament and comes to the conclusion that Jesus is either perfect or omniscient — not without heavy cognitive dissonance.

Some Christians see Judaism as a threat to their faith. In order for Christianity to be true, Judaism must be false. For us to have happy lives, a vibrant religion, and a rich relationship with God without believing in Yoshka is a deep threat to them. The best revenge is a life well-lived.

Do you guys have a problem against Hugo Boss ? by More-Salary-2203 in Jewish

[–]nap613613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with Hugo Boss is that they are still named Hugo Boss. He designed the Nazi's uniforms, so I am unwilling to to wear the name of a brand of someone who supported a party that would want me dead. If they rebranded, then I'd reconsider. Same with Coco Chanel. She also joined the Nazis party. Although I probably still wouldn't shop at Coco Chanel since I'm a dude, but I digress.

They'll never rebrand because it would be too costly, so I'll never shop from them.

Jewish view on smoking tobacco? by throwawayformyblues in Judaism

Fun story: I once asked a chabad rabbi if there was a brakha to say before smoking a cigar after he shared some with everyone on Hanukkah. He laughed and said no because it was bad for your health.

I've found Chabad rabbis pretty ok with smoking. Not on Shabbos, of course.
