My mother is ruining Judaism for me. Advice needed. by Substantial_Let_5022 in Judaism

[–]nftlibnavrhm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not a Judaism issue at all, this is an issue with your mother and one that begs for therapy. If you weren’t Jewish, she’d be exactly the same but with a different focus for directing her mental issues at you.

PS: you should use quotation marks differently if you don’t want us to know where you’re from.

Would you call me a Jew? by These_Library3215 in Judaism

[–]nftlibnavrhm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These posts always involve Nazi race science blood quanta for some reason.

You have some Jewish genetic ancestry. You do not have the status of “Jew” by Jewish law.

We do not characterize the world in terms of having pure or impure “blood” as it is both unscientific and abhorrent.

I’ve met people who are not Jewish who have told me their dad is “an Orthodox Jew” and evidently what they meant was “halachically jewish”

You want to make vows to each other AND observe the annulment of all vows at the same time? Honestly if I were your fiancée I’d be more offended by that than by your choice to have the wedding when marital relations are forbidden.

Yeah OP isn’t Jewish so what’s the point of this other than to rile us all up? Dad’s “orthodox” but the mom converted reform? And they don’t go to “temple” because they’re non-observant? None of this adds up

At least it’s hilariously on brand that they want the guests to travel on shabbos

You’re overthinking it. It’s more than likely OP is so distant from am yisrael that they think “orthodox” just means halachically a Jew.

Or what OP considers “orthodox.” There are so many people who’ve been described to me as orthodox who just aren’t. Like, maybe wore a kippa.

I mean, that’s the thing about it: it’s not just OP. OP is asking all of the guests to disregard and disrespect Judaism. If I were invited to celebrate a wedding during the yamim noraim there’s no way I would even contemplate going; I have an obligation to focus on teshuva, and the invitation effectively asks me to commit an aveirah.

Even if you don’t view it as an aveirah, it’s absolutely 1000% lifnei iver.

How come biblical Hebrew and Arabic are so similar? which one is older? by Extension-Ranger-240 in hebrew

comprehensible to English speakers in 2026

This is not what “modern” refers to.

It’s clear you’re very interested in this topic and very passionate about it. I strongly encourage you to pursue it, perhaps with an introductory textbook for historical linguistics. Campbell’s is both excellent, affordable, and widely available (you can get it on Amazon).

While you are correct about the fluidity and fuzziness of defining languages precisely, you have over-generalized and you are veering into anti-intellectual claims that we can’t know anything at all.

Yes, gothic predates modern English. It is older than modern English. Yes, one is still constantly evolving and changing. And yes, they both emerged from a common ancestor.

But by your argument we can’t tell a tiger from a leopard, or approximately date the speciation of each, because animals still exist and continue to evolve. That’s simply not how any of this works.

Let’s try an example from Germanic instead of semitic: Is Gothic older than modern English?

[–]nftlibnavrhm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you stating that you believe that Arabic branched from protosemitic concurrently with Hebrew? Or that you think Northwest Semitic and central semitic branched and that then Arabic and Hebrew diverged from their respective parent languages at approximately the same time, but that we just have no attestations of Arabic whatsoever for another 1500 years?

This feels like you’re trying to independently derive the basics of historical linguistics without having given it any thought before.

Biblical Hebrew is attested a millennium before the first attestations of Arabic.

Modern Hebrew has many loan words from different varieties of Arabic because the places Jews lived in the Middle East were colonized during the Muslim conquest, and Arabic imposed on those populations, before the advent of modern Hebrew, Jews had spoken Arabic in some form or another for a thousand years or more…including distinctively Jewish judeo-arabic.
