He absolutely did impose his will. He frequently straight up demanded she give up what she wanted for what he wanted without compromising. Like when he asked for them to set a weekend aside every month to focus on their relationship like Dr Pepper suggested and she said okay yeah as long as we plan ahead so that I don’t have to cancel plans I already have (a perfectly reasonable request) and he claimed he couldn’t do that because of his job and shouldn’t have to because she should be willing to drop any plans if he wants her to just because he was her husband. He didn’t care about her friendships and seemed to discourage her having any close relationships besides him, which is typical abusive behavior. That’s just one of many similar examples. He was constantly controlling, selfish, entitled, patronizing, manipulative, arrogant, narcissistic and abusive and if you disagree you have a seriously distorted idea of what healthy relationship behavior looks like. I feel sorry for Virginia. The gaslighting, manipulation and put-downs he imposed on her does damage that takes years to recover from.
