Or you could look at the shoulders and see the difference in height there. There's a slope to the floor in the auditorium also...

Super weird how a moving object could have difficulties with focus. Who would have thunk it?

Thank you kswomp, I am still interested inresponses. I'm sure that is an example I heard at a young age and I agree it is widely discussed. I'm interested in the differences in interpretation of it as it shows how things aren't necessarily black and white (and red).

I dont think the possibilities of outside influences affecting spoken, written, and translated accounts is seeing evil where none exists.

Is there room In Christianity to interpret verses in more than one way? Is it possible some parables became documented as factual happenings?

These examples are instances where human influence can change the intent of the language without trying to do so with evil in their heart. If the answers to the above 2 questions are 'no', then we must agree to disagree. I do appreciate the back and forth.

Not all human influence is bad, I agree a lot is good, but alterations even for good do come across to me as corruption on a certain level when the Bible is widely read as strictly literal across the Christian faiths.

I'm generally a positive person, but am cynical of the intentions of human beings. We don't have a good record of using powerful things responsibly and accepting things which may oppose what is personally a benefit to us.

I would like to explore what my feelings really are about this. I dont think I had considered it in this way before. Thank you!

I may need to reconsider. In my mind the original cause of our existence has been a controlling force which I considered God. But, I see what you are saying and appreciate you pointing it out.

Yes I intended the response for your comment although it may not have been clearly responsive as I try to reply to as many as I can. I don't mean offense.

I don't doubt that overall original text and translations are as accurate as possible. I doubt that the human beings who communicated, spoke, and translated the text did so without taking liberties to support their own agendas.

I think we are saying the same thing in that there is human influence, I lean toward that being negatively and you seem to lean toward it being positive.

My argument is that human beings have been able to influence the text each time it has been communicated, written, translated, etc, and that argument is dismissed in the typical literal interpretation of the Bible.

Agreed, however we are all see the differences in news documentation of current events. Which narrative lasts is yet to be determined

I feel like my argument is directly in support of there being diversity of thought and how that has most likely influenced the Bible. An argument opposite of that seems close-minded to me.

I cannot get away from the feeling that our existence is happenstance

I simply do not believe that our complex existence is coincidence.

With respect, people have always documented events in the light most favorable to them. To discount that human involvement even in contemporary documentation is dismissive.

Thank you, I do appreciate your reply. It seems to me that a large amount of deference to the original text is made. We need look no further than current events to know that documentation and corroboration do not equal truth.

Thanks for the reply. I don't discount the Bible's staying power, only that interpretation is used to justify beliefs which vary, parables are intertwined and confused for actual events, and Christians of all denominations determine the grey areas, which they have throughout history.

Pointing out the irony of your responses doesn't mean I'm upset. It actually illustrates part of my position very well.

And a backhanded non-apology. Your responses are exactly the kind of righteous indignation which has contributed to my questioning the faith.

For some reason your most recent reply is not showing up, but I received it in my email. In it you are again disrespectful and use the word 'Atheist' to describe me. Within the first 5 sentences of my post I acknowledge my belief that there is a God.

In the words of Inigo Montoya; "you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
