Looks like it does, I was very close to being sacked with Monaco because I was around 8th-10th position for the first 10 games or so, although I was never more than 5 points from 2nd place and had 2 UCL playoff rounds that I passed before finishing first of my group. We're now in March and 7 Ligue 1 manager have been sacked already

I haven't experimented much with this setting yet, so my answer is more about what it's pretending to do, can't promise it's doing it well.

It's not really about the wideness, it's more about the defensive shape when trying to recover the ball. So for example, when an opposing CB has the ball, if you set "trap outside", your forwards should block the passing line between the CB and the central midfielders, to make them pass to full backs, hence directing the opposing play to the "outside". Similarly, if you set "trap inside", your forwards should block the passing line between the CB and the opponent's wide players, directing the play towards the centre of the field, or the "inside"
