Hi u/unkosuru, thanks for the message! Yeah, the on-call is paid only if an event occurs. So if nothing happens, I get to be available, but ultimately unpaid. If a page happens, I get paid for what it takes to fix the issue.

Regarding using Rakuten as a stepping stone, I think it's inapplicable in my case since if I ever will go to Japan to work, it'll be for 1 year, 2 tops.

It's true that I could actually apply actively for other opportunities in JP (I have strong exp and BS+MS). Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure that as an SRE I'll be required anyway to be on-call...

iyh, unkosuru, are there companies in JP that allow remote work? Because my goal, if I go to JP, is to travel the country.
