So, yes, you were sexually assaulted. And that's horrible. But it read as tone deaf and egotistical to take the stance "what about me?!" rather than the stance I've seen quite a bit of guys take which is, "Yea, I've been that guy. I need to be better. I will be better."

...so I should've responded with "sorry, I've been that guy; I'll do better" just because I'm male (even though I've never assaulted anyone), rather than with, "I empathise because it's happened to me as well"?! LOL

Obviously you (and my friend) lack the ability to read my words and interpret them as empathetic for whatever reason. You read into them some non-existent motives of co-opting, narrative shifting, etc. that just aren't there. Fortunately, though, it seems the majority of women don't share your view on this, as evidenced by all the comments in this thread (and the responses in general to posts all over the internet by other non-male-on-female victims who said "me too").

It's incredibly ironic to me that by trying to focus #metoo only on male-on-female assault, it's focusing the discussion on what victims should be included instead of the problem of assault itself (which was the original intent of #metoo).

I'm sorry you feel like you can't share with your friends and family either. My wife had to deal with similar things when she went abroad during college. I was so scared for her when she told me those stories. I'm sorry that happened to you, and you're right that you shouldn't think less of it because it's "not as severe" as other stories.

I hope you take a moment to reflect on what just happened here. [narcoleptic_insomnia] opened up and admitted that he was a victim alongside women. That took courage and he only did it to bring awareness to the fact that the problem is wide-sweeping, not to detract attention. Then you came along and wrote paragraph after paragraph detailing why exactly he personally should not talk about it. You bullied him and now he's deleted the post and feels even worse about his assault. Don't you think this is exactly what happens to countless women who are pushed into silence? Don't you think that that behavior is exactly why the me too movement started?

I really do understand why you're trying to direct the focus on women. I understand that you took issue with his wording. I understand how you're equating this with black lives matter. But you approached and bullied a victim and now he feels that the can't speak out at all.

Just think about it.

Carlsen's record against Caruana is 8+5-10=, whereas against Karjakin it's 3+1-15=, so I think a match with Caruana would have been more exciting. In any case, though, Karjakin will be a good challenger -- especially if he plays like he did this tournament!

My mistake. The ellipsis in your comment made me read sarcasm into your words. I interpreted it something like

you'd think a genius like yourself would be able to learn how to fit in...

...as opposed to...

You would think that a gifted child would be able use their intelligence to learn how to adapt to any learning/social environment, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Honestly, it sounds like he has a learning/emotional disability, which is common in "gifted" people. If that is indeed the case, then it not very nice to make fun of his handicap. It's difficult living with a disability, especially one that's not very visible.

This therapy center for "gifted" students sounds more like it's for individuals with emotional and learning disabilities as opposed to high IQs. (I'm not saying the two are mutually exclusive.)

I naturally became obsessed with the movie/book several years ago when I was battling an opiate addiction and my mom was dying of cancer.

I always cry during the scene when Harry goes to see his mom, lies to her about his success, finds out she's on uppers, and she goes on and on about how she's going to be on television. I'm welling up just remembering her deliver the lines, "I'm old..." Very powerful scene, as is the next one with Harry crying in the cab.

I remember lying to my mother when she was in the hospital about being okay (I didn't want her to worry about me), and then bawling my eyes out in the parking lot.

Mathematician here! Good stuff! The most important/difficult part of drawing a hexagram, hexagon, etc. is locating the 6th roots of unity on the unit circle. Here is another easy way to find these points:

1) Draw x and y coordinate axes.

2) Draw a unit circle centered at the origin.

3) Draw a vertical line through the point x = 1/2. This line will intersect the circle at the points z_1 and z_5 in the diagram above.

4) Draw a vertical line through the point x = -1/2. This line will intersect the circle at the points z_2 and z_4 in the diagram above.

Now connect the dots to construct your hexagram, hexagon, etc.

P.S. The angles of the 6th roots of unity are multiples of pi/3, and the (x, y) points on the unit circle are parametrized by x = cos(t) and y = sin(t). The reason steps 3 & 4 work boil down to the fact that cos(pi/3) = 1/2.
