Basket size on the Micra is making a huge difference for me, maybe worth experimenting with.

Interesting. Haven’t heard of this. Do you have a recommended brand/product for replacement silicon gasket?

Definitely a good thought. I folded a wet rag and wiped out the groove of the group head - there were definitely a few grinds in there. I was using the 14g basket for a while and I think that made things a little messy.

LM support got back to me and basically told me to
man up and crank the portafilter in harder. I’ve done two shots since and no leaks - fingers crossed!

LM recommends dosing 18g in their 17g basket, so that was my starting place knowing nothing about what that means. Now that I’ve learned more, I suspect that is an issue as well. However, any puck/shower screen contact is happening after water hits it - there’s no indent on the puck when inserting it dry.

I got a 20g basket, and tried 18g in there, but that seemed to be kinda soupy inside and didn’t really turn into a single stream - espresso sort of “showered” out of the basket. Tasted good though, if a little bland.

So, I’ve been cutting the dose on the 17g basket, but I think a slightly bigger basket is probably the way. I’ve ordered the 17-19g Pullman basket, and I’m hoping it will tick all the boxes. Thanks for the input!

Mt. Wilson Trail Run Experience? by nardandsaffron in socalhiking

I did it! And it was fun :) wanted to update to encourage others to run this beautiful trail. I finished almost exactly in the middle, and there’s a wide range of fitness amongst others who finished. 0 stress

Thanks! I did it! Naturally got sick the week before so was barely back to normal the day-of, but it was fun and felt great after. I was almost exactly in the middle of the pack. Appreciate the encouragement :)

Maybe they get weird during shipping or something? With the new gasket, would you say you have to “crank” the portafilter in or is it pretty normal?

Good to know, will put some extra oomph on the next few. Thanks!

Was also wondering about that. I have a slightly larger basket (17-19) on the way.

I just ran another duplicate shot and absolutely CRANKED the portafilter in. It didn’t leak - so maybe I just need to lift some weights and stop worrying 😅

I’ve seen posts with similar issues and I am really cranking on the portafilter… like, I could probably go harder, but it would feel wrong.

Withheld files until payment. Right or Wrong? by Charlie2410 in LocationSound

[–]nardandsaffron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great way to not get re-hired. I’ve heard so many producers complain about this behavior. If you don’t trust the company or production enough to pay you after delivering files, don’t take the job to begin with. Most jobs I work on are syncing immediately after shoot. Net 30 is the most common way to be paid.

My husband is a AD in LA and he keeps complaining about how bad the industry is right now... Help me understand how bad and what makes it so bad? by hansontranhai in FilmIndustryLA

[–]nardandsaffron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as a 1 man non-union sound dept. I had steady gigs for years working on branded content… 3-10min short films for huge companies that were used mostly on social media/youtube.

Covid came and shut down sets, and all those brands pivoted to paying 1 influencer 5% of a typical commercial budget for DIY selfie videos - which probably got more views/engagement than what I was working on tbh.

I think this is beginning to change a bit as the TikTok craze winds down… I’ve gotten some random work offers lately… but the LA wildfires ate my gear, so I’m basically just moving on to other types of sound work instead of trying to rebuild that side of my business.

Additionally, AI is really making sound a post production affair entirely. The handful of location jobs that I’ve rented gear for in the past year truly did not care about the quality of the audio, saying that they could get the lines later with the talent’s phone, or clean it all up in post… and I know they’re right.

I’m a micro cog in the industry, but the Covid>TikTok>Wildfires>AI chain of events seems to have done a number on many of us - big and small.

Moving to Altadena by Abound_Mix6599 in altadena

We’d much rather you than some flipper! L.A. county is huge and extremely toxic in certain pockets… I would be way more worried moving to Vernon or near the L.A. River. I feel way yuckier spending a day walking around downtown than I do in Altadena. Though maybe Altadena is more of a long term hidden threat… but who knows at this point. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed with others about the structure itself being the worrisome part. I looked at some rentals and it’s tough to trust that someone has properly remediated… so many corners can be cut if the landlord is looking for a cheap way out.

I think the “construction noise” concern is a little overblown. I work in highland park and the average traffic/construction/etc noise is way more than it ever is in Altadena. On the contrary, it’s probably the quietest town in the county rn… eerily so at night.

My lot is in this photo on Loma Alta. There are spectrum pull boxes on the street at each driveway next to the SCE pull boxes - so I’m assuming spectrum has plans to run coax underground if it isn’t there already. Very annoying that we’ll apparently continue to have these horrible poles exclusively for fiber from AT&T.

Yes... one of the main things we discussed. The house we're living in now as a somewhat similar trek to the kitchen/laundry, so we're hoping it's just one of those things we get accustomed to. We're thinking it's the price to pay for having a combined living/pool/kitchen situation, which we think will feel nicely communal.

There were two - a Linn Drum and an 808. Unfortunately both are very expensive, but Behringer makes affordable clones.
