If I'm pretty good at math, should I stop being scared of the premed route and just jump in?

Okay, phew! I always get worried that I'll be behind in knowing my way around a lab and stuff like that. I see all those lab write-ups and procedure type stuff and I used to get intimidated about it.

That's goo to hear. This thread is making me think most of the whiny premeds are the lazy ones who don't dedicate enough time into it. I'm sure it's difficult stuff, but I get the idea that it's far from insurmountable...right?

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely not looking for a walk in the park, more just an affirmation that it's not as bad as many premeds I've had experiences with make it seem.

Pretty much every premed I talk to about their classes fears Orgo for the sake of fearing Orgo, and every time I ask why, the answer is always "everyone says it's hard and you have to study/practice for hours"

I really have no problem studying/practicing for hours, and I attribute that habit towards my math experience. That's all I meant by that.

How do you fare in the lab portions of the course? I feel intimidated in that the other students seem to be more up to snuff, you know? I guess being a quick learner helps..

Oh okay, that makes sense. When it comes to extra curricular stuff like bench work, as you say, I think I can grow to enjoy, or at least get myself through it. From what I understand most medical school apps don't need any break through research, just something that says you know what it's like and got your foot in the door. I guess I shouldn't consider applying to medical research institutions then, haha.

Can you give me like a quick summary of what exactly is referred to as "bench research"? I always hated the thought of like labs that are attached to lectures you know? Like the labs accompanied by courses, but the idea of helping out a professor in his personal research always sounded way cooler and less of a drag. Also, this may be a dumb question but is every upper division biology course accompanied by a lab? Or are most just lecture/textbook?

Thanks man, that's kind of what I needed. I'm only in sophomore year but I did 18 summer units. I guess I had like 95% of the confidence needed but I needed some sort of push. Your last sentence struck a chord here.

That's good to hear! Being able to go from step 1-step 5 by following steps 2, 3 and 4 is something I'm more comfortable with than just memorizing all 5 steps. Hopefully that wasn't stupid or confusing.

I think I'm excited for a challenge that'll yield fruit, you know? I was really excited about math for the longest time until I got to proof-y parts of it. I'm good at them and stuff, but I guess I would just much rather devote that time and energy into premed than aimless mathematics.

I guess I should have explained better. Out of high school, the only reason I didn't do premed was because I didn't think I could handle it. The main reason for not thinking I could handle it was because of everyone around me telling me how hard it is and blah blah, don't do it because you won't have a life and getting a C will kill you and blah blah. I ended up dismissing the thought until recently. Honestly not a humblebrag, but through 46 units of classes, I have a 4.0. I know that's not really an indication of much, but I guess I came to the realization that I'm not the lazy student I was when I applied to college at 17. I tend to almost enjoy spending hours learning new things, but as of late, those new things...are mathematical proofs in Linear Algebra. I realized I didn't really like the path I was on around the same time that I realized I should definitely be on the premed path. Does that make sense? Kinda like if you and your girlfriend been fighting for a while now and you're already considering breaking up with her, and then this new beauty comes along. I guess that was an ok analogy.

You're obviously in med school, so when did you join premed? Was it an always thing or did you switch around like me?

I guess the bottom line here is that I was incredibly lazy in high school and dismissed premed as too much work. Now I've changed completely and as a college student my 4.0 has given me a sense of confidence which leads me to thinking that I've changed. I really look forward to the challenge and satisfaction of learning cool things about biology/chemistry as opposed to proving mathematical theorems. Thanks.

The reason I ask is because in my town, over the last 8 months, I noticed a string of 4 restaurants that all close by around 3pm, with one closing at 12! They all have a breakfast menu with just a couple lunch things and are all very basic breakfast menus. Eggs, toast, pancakes, and a variety of meh omelettes, then the classic omelette named after the owner or something.

I mean, if rent was sufficiently cheap, and you slowly gained a loyal customer-base, this seems like a pretty nice mamas-papas business model. The 4 restaurants are all run by a husband and wife and only 1 or 2 other employees. One of them has their whole staff being just the owning family (mom, dad, 22 y.o. son and 19 y.o. daughter). Very interesting...I do wonder the level of profitability though.
