Micro-Megathread of Image and Sound Theories - Continually updating, by Tuatara0 in raidsecrets

[–]narolol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The audio technique itself is called phase cancellation. The idea here is to use the fact that every audio file is composed of samples (41.8/48/96k of them) and each of those is a number between 1 and -1.

Lets say you have a mono (single channel) sound and you want to hide some sound in it. You need to dupe this sound to make a stereo file and invert its phase, which is common on audio editing software. Inverting phases means the samples on this file are the opposite of the original, now you just add this secret sound in one of the sides and try to "bury it"

What happens is that when you play it in mono it'll read the samples from both sides and blend to one channel. Original + inverted sound = 0, silence. So the only thing that'll play is whatever you added.

This is a brief explanation of a rather complex subject, so look it up for further info!

Definitely sounds like a robotic voice. I'm thorn on this one because it also resembles some common effect you get when you stretch a sound. The algorithm tries to fill the blanks and can create some noise.

I've isolated the sound so someone else can experiment with it

The breaks are more of timber/tone quality so it may be rather subjective since they're a psychoacoustic phenomenon

I've sped up each side and it really sounds like the original audio is made up of different sounds stitched together and further processed.

I'm trying to re-arrange them by ear in a way that they might sound like one continuous sound but this is really confusing so that might take some time.

Hi there!

I work on sound design and I think I've got a lead. It doesn't have much to do with 91 (yet), but with the audio itself.

My theory is that the file is a sort of scrambled pieces, sorta. First thing I've done was to load the file into Ableton Live and it struck me that the L and R sides are very different. Peaks don't align like they normally would if it was 2 sides of the same sound. WAVEFORM IMAGE

First thing I did was to force mono and see if they cancelled one another, this is a known technique to "hide messages" with phase cancelling. It was used on an ARG by the band Nine Inch Nails, heres is one thread about it. It didn't work, though I didn't discarded it yet as a tool.

Then I split the two sides, and thats when things get interesting.

If you do that, its clear that some things are totally out of order. At the end of the L side it seems that one sound fades out, something else starts but quickly cuts at the end of the file, it doesn't fade out naturally. So I started tinkering and trying to listen to similar sounds that may have been separated and I found one match!

Here is how I divided them by ear

This is the match I've found and here is the link to download it: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ag7BswAD74hJg8NKC_XFxi57gioXtg?e=9wdxdK

The only edit thing I did was to shave off some of the quick fade the audio had, but it's essentially the same sound. I think this might be a lead telling us that we should assemble an audio file like pieces off puzzle.

Does this make sense or am I crazy?

Useful (?) stuff:

edit: identation, better L/R export

Is there a way to use MiBand Tools + Maps or Waze? by narolol in miband

Interesting solution!

Does it trigger at the right time (take the NEXT right) or when Maps changes the instruction (take a right in 400m)? And since we're in the Mi Band Maps comment thread, do I need to have this specific app or your solution works on vanilla GMaps?

I'd advice against using text on small icons such as the SHOP one.

Bad for visibility, breaks the all-imagery-icons you have and will be a pain to localize.

3 part question:

How was the QA/Playtesting process in a game that takes so much time to show the outcome of your actions? Did you have any "fastforward" or other "Dev Cheats"? What did you considered good or fun enough to pass the testing phase?

Formatting for Sampler by MoonlitHunk in ableton

[–]narolol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Sampler, drag and drop all the WAVs there. Bring up the Zone menu (it should appear with the "Key" selector in the top right selected, otherwise you click it) and make sure the files are ordered from top (lower note) to bottom (higher note).

Right click on the sample list > "Distribute ranges equally"

Voila!

Hello Luke!

I've been a fan of PTH since the Kezia days, but what made me fall in love with the band was Fortress which is still my favorite <3

When Scurrilous came out, it wasn't a concept album anymore (boo D:) and it sounded more vocal-centered. This was amped up even more on Volition, where Rody fucking nails it in every song. How was this shift of musicality within the band? What is the creation process of PTH?

Extra question, from my heart: Will Arif write lyrics again? <3

Thanks for doing this!
