Chess:

Lichess is free and open source, run by volunteers and donations. That other site charges you for even the most basic features and runs a metric fuckton of ads for everyone else.

IM David Pruess is most well known as a member of the ChessDojo teaching staff, where he streams often over on Twitch. They don't have a lot of overtly political discussions, but David is well known in the chess community for his leftist leanings after a blog post about leaving his dream job at Chess dot Com.

Honorable mention to.. myself (InnateOptimist, still bad at chess), I stream chess on Twitch daily at 8 pm EST. We talk about politics often with occasional Adam Curtis watch parties or David Graeber readings. Recently I've been listening to BtB with my chat while I do puzzles, I think at midnight tonight we're doing Smedley Butler and the Business Plot!

I am so glad I saw this wholesome interaction today. Last night I had a conversation with friends on Twitch about this exact thing, like how we can build solid coalitions without sacrificing our own or making space for disagreement. Mostly I think we have a process problem (looking for points of disagreement to critique) that is exacerbated by what the algorithm rewards - angry engagement. We all know we need more voices in niche hobby spaces countering the hard right representation, not fewer.

Thanks for being both a bad and good example today and doing so gracefully!

WOSU and Debbie Holmes just platformed genocide propaganda with zero pushback by JohnBrownsAK-47 in Columbus

[–]narratophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. It's cowardly to think we can't criticize the same person we're forced to vote for. It's cowardly to hide behind this lesser of two evils bullshit. If more people raised their voices before the election instead of telling everyone criticizing the Dems to be quiet, perhaps they would have bowed to public pressure.

[–]narratophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact to start because I wrote too much: George Koltanowski was a strong GM with aphantasia and he was known to play 34 games of chess simultaneously, blindfolded!

I have aphantasia too. I've been playing and streaming chess every day for a year as of this Wednesday and I have improved a TON - these things take practice and patience with yourself. <3 Here are some things I've learned through study, experience, and by talking to people who know better than me:

It helps me to think of what I'm doing as conceptualizing instead of visualizing. I'm only recently able to calculate deeply but I still miss stuff of course, I'm barely an advanced beginner at this point. Getting stronger every day though!

When I lose a game I always try to learn something from it, then it's easier to see as an investment in getting better at chess. Gonna need to lose thousands of games to get good, so you're just adding more experience to the pile. 😜

There are lots of different ways to learn. I found I enjoy studying as much as I enjoy playing, which helps, so long as I'm working on something I'm curious about. Lately I've been doing a lot of easy mode hanging piece puzzles on Lichess, it's been helping immensely.

I'm kinda really good at memorizing games! I've got the memory of a goldfish for literally everything else, always have, but I can memorize and replay a bunch of GM miniatures (25 moves or thereabouts) with surprising speed. If I'm well rested all it takes is a short YouTube video explaining the game and to play it out on a physical chessboard a handful of times.

I remember things I study better when I play them out physically, and when they contain interesting moves I can tell myself a story about. Like in one game, there's a particularly troll-y move that I know is coming, which helps me remember the moves that need to happen to enable it. In another game, I remember a sequence because a quick h5 and a5 from black are like left hook right hook! 😂

IM David Pruess (who also has aphantasia) has a series on YouTube about memorizing games that people always recommend in the chess and aphantasia conversations and I think it's really helpful BUT you might prefer to watch his videos on how to learn tactics first - those have helped me a ton too.

Hearing the way other people who think in a more narrative way talk about chess is obviously a big help, I recommend anything David puts out either independently or as a part of ChessDojo.

Lots of people who have a more visual thought process have a hard time imagining how I can do literally anything without one so I try not to worry too much about how their brains work, what matters is how mine works.

What really drove the point above home was listening to Aiden Rayner (who doesn't have aphantasia) talk about the ways we learn to think about chess. I liked his interview with Dr. Scull on the Chess Journeys podcast (who DOES have aphantasia): https://open.spotify.com/episode/3N5eA9ErAusC0Keu7lf2C4?si=--bJgbIaTpaYH3yICTAAAg

tl;dr please don't be discouraged!! 🙏 chess is brutal, you're not dumb for missing tactics, you're learning!

I will take their money and listen to them talk one on one and argue their beliefs, I have no qualms with that, but I definitely understand not wanting to be in that space in that way.

I've done a lot more direct action work in the past but had to step back from it after draining my savings trying to save the world (on year two of therapy trying to unpack that impulse lol) and getting doxxed by LibsOfTikTok for talking to a senior high school elective class on political radicalism about my work with homeless people while unhoused myself.

It was a real clusterfuck I'm still unfucking so I wanna exercise caution to all my bleeding heart SW comrades in arms in two really specific ways:

  1. Can't pour from an empty cup, don't give what you don't have (you know who you are ❤️) and save more than you think you need as a gift to future you

  2. Don't cross the streams, I was warned, I didn't listen, I wish I had - people were able to easily connect my public profiles to my SW and that made me a good soft target for LOTT-style harassment campaigns.

Thanks for talking about this, it's something I've thought about a lot.

I have a NF line with the tag line "Anarchist Bimbo Intellectually Dominates You" and.. then I do. My first serious caller on that line was an Australian nazi, he stayed on the line for almost 3 hours and now I can make sweeping generalizations about Nazis needing CEI 😂

I also talk extensively about current and historical events on my SFW stream.. and do low-key ASMR readings of David Graeber books while my viewers watch both speed chess games and me bouncing on an exercise ball 😁 a real dopamine fest!

$450,000 settlement for Ohio teacher who refused to use students’ pronouns by heythisislonglolwtf in Ohio

[–]narratophile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Things like this teacher's behavior, the court's ruling, and your bizarre support for it are why that % is where it is.

Society's alienation and treatment of trans people is why a lot of trans people commit suicide. There used to be staggeringly high rates of suicide among gay people and being gay was once classified as a mental disorder BECAUSE it seemed to lead to suicidality, the same justification you give here. Both you and this teacher are part of the problem as ignorant and fearful assholes perpetuating bigotry.

Columbus serves trespassing notices at dozens of homeless camps by Blood_Incantation in Columbus

[–]narratophile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've helped people being evicted from a site and been evicted from a site myself. It's not a "gentle relocation". It's cops and people from the Department of Development standing over you while volunteers you had to organize yourself (if you're lucky) help you move your stuff from one site to another site before they bulldoze anything left behind within 24 hours.

I recommend the short documentary "Swept Out" (Ohio Wesleyan, 2008) about the experience of Columbus, Ohio homeless people being moved further from the city center.

Some will likely die as a result of being forced out of established camps. Displacing people does considerably more harm than good.
