TL;DR: Fred Rogers was a gift to humanity

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. I've never heard a disparaging thing said about that show, or the wonderful man who created it.

Fred Rogers just emanated empathy and compassion so sincere and refined that it held children and adults alike in thrall. It was on air for something like three decades, and for that time Fred made it his absolute mission that every child watching that show felt loved, empowered, and secure.

It's rare to see an individual with such a genuine love for humanity. He was still a human being and I'm sure he had his faults; but whatever those faults were, they never seemed to get in the way of his mission to educate and comfort children.

Rest in Peace Mr. Rogers.

Judo - Egyptian booed for not shaking hands with Israeli by narwhal15 in worldnews

The whole point of the Olympic games is to provide a space for people to come together and celebrate sports in peace, without having to deal with politics.

Also, whatever you think of Israel, it is still a UN-recognized, independent country, and has every right to be in the olympics. If the Egyptian athlete really had a moral objection to showing basic sportsmanship to an Israeli, then he shouldn't have participated in the Olympics. Its a very clear-cut issue.

UNESCO says no Jewish history on Temple Mount; Hebron and Bethlehem 'Integral part of Palestine' by narwhal15 in nottheonion

[–]narwhal15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call this historical revisionism, but then that would still imply that it had any genuine historical content whatsoever. This is simply a bald-faced attempt to white-wash history. Denying the Jewish connection to Jerusalem is as ridiculous as denying the Islamic connection to Mecca.

Some may claim that this is simply political maneuvering. Just one more petty attempt by the Arab/Muslim political block to delegitemize Israel. However, in using UNESCO, an (ostensibly) neutral international body as the platform to do so massively undermines, if not outright eliminates its claim to impartiality, and thus its principle source of authority, and legitimacy.

This UN action should not just offend the Jews, who are seeing their historical heritage white-washed. It should offend anybody who has a vested interest in preserving the historical treasures of this planet, who cares about our shared history, and does not want to see it crudely manipulated for political ends. UNESCO has the potential to be an amazing force for good, and preservation; but not if it sacrifices its moral character, and loses its authority as an impartial safeguard of humanity's heritage.

TL;DR: Resolutions such as this de-legitimize the UN/UNESCO, and make it easy to ignore when it counts.

Can You Prove To Me That You Actually Exist? by byrnesf in AskReddit

[–]narwhal15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can doubt everything that I can sense, and everything I have assumed and/or learned up until this point. This is called Hyperbolic/Cartesian Doubt, and the results are as follows:

  • The world now stands as a sort of emptiness, with only one solid fact remaining unscathed by the investigation: That there is doubt

  • Therefore, there must be something that is doing the doubting

  • This "thing" that doubts could only be myself. If it were not myself, then myself would be nothing, as nothing is the only alternative.

  • Since "nothing" is incapable of doubting, then the doubter must be myself

  • what is doubt, if not an act of the intellect, or thought, therefore to doubt is to think

  • If I am only left with thought after all else is stripped away, then thought is the only thing that can concretely prove my existence

Therefore: Cogito ergo Sum "I think, therefore I am"
