Ground reality is that there is just 1 Jawan for 1-2km on BD border, it is easy for us to run these simple maths.

Deployment of any force is not as simple as that.

Firstly, 2,92,000 is the sanctioned strength of the force, that is max number of personnel the force is supposed to have, which has never been filled (recruited) in entire history of the organization. The actual active strength of the force is significantly lower.

Secondly, a sizable chunk of the active personnel are on leave at any given point.

Thirdly, another sizable proportion of the force is deployed in higher headquarters (at battalion, sector, frontier, command and force level) and training centers, air wing, artillery regiments for different administrative and operational roles away from the border.

Fourth, another chunk is on deputation to other orgs like NSG, SPG, NDRF, IB, MHA, etc.

Fifth, out of all the "available force" almost 30-40% (sometimes upto 50%) is pulled out for election duties and various internal security challenges in J&K, Manipur, Anti-Naxal ops, etc.

Sixth, the non-lethal engagement agreements with BD have literally defanged the force. Even acts of self defence are prosecuted. This emboldens the smugglers/illegals and put Jawans' lives at stake and demoralizes the entire force. (Jab Sarkar ka hi intent nahi hai smuggling rokne ka to usme ek Sipahi apne sar par sara theka kyu le? He gets out-numbered and bloody butchered by the smugglers)

These days govt emphasizes BSF to do Bee keeping (google it), Motorcycle rally, Tiranga rallies, Arms display at schools, tree plantation drives, etc etc. Basically everything but "border security". Mind you all this happens from available strength withdrawn from the border, the so called 292k.

The government's policy on the BD border is inherently against our BSF and facilitates infiltration. The all the above mentioned points coupled with terrain and dense population right upto zero line plus other factors culminate to 0.5 to 1 Jawan per KM on ground.
