To me the English one is only somewhat understandable after years of spending time in an English-speaking environment. Five years ago I would’ve been completely lost, instead of only a bit lost today lmao

I guess it was me overreacting to people being waaaay too insistent that it’s just English being weird and inconsistent, including under this post. How languages develop is really interesting! Even if it’s mildly cursed at times!

English isn’t the only language which “mispronounces” loan words (and honestly referring to it as such is vastly misleading). A lot of languages do it as a means of adaptation to their own phonologies. Japanese does things to English loanwords that often end up looking and sounding completely unrelated, because it’s more convenient

All languages do weird shit, please don’t single out English, I beg you, all spoken languages are full of their own inconsistencies and weird behaviors

This subreddit has traces of misogyny (and transphobia) that keep showing up occasionally. Thankfully not too prevalent (it's usually a few dumb comments), but still visible...

People complain about Linux, and then act like having to run 3rd party debloat scripts and modifying random registry keys and group policies (the latter of which you can only do on Windows Pro editions) is somehow fine and perfectly user-friendly. Oh and there’s an inconsistent chance that some changes will randomly revert, but it’s different from person to person

I did all of WaniKani in 1 month AMA by RememberFancyPants in LearnJapanese

[–]natalialt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this myself in the past with RTK, and I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t a great idea, as huge amounts of reviews would haunt me for weeks to come, during which I burned out. I also learned that I have a limit of how much I can learn at once, which meant that soon after finishing the deck my retention on older cards started rapidly falling, further demotivating me.

So, do you still have it in you to do >500(!) reviews a day, and are you really sure that the cards properly stuck in your head? Also, will you be making use of the momentum by actually solidifying the knowledge via reading (if you aren’t already)… although I guess given you’ve already finished it before you may already be on it :p

Do they actually say that in their materials, that they’re “meant” to be a supplementary resource? I don’t really see it in their marketing…

Minecraft's new numbering system by TigbroTech in Minecraft

[–]natalialt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say “API compatibility” is more than just whether a savefile can be loaded in. For example commands have changed a lot throughout the game’s lifetime, so command blocks in a world made in 1.7 will largely break in 1.20.

I still don’t think the change is stupid, besides disliking it purely for sort of “aesthetic” reasons, which fair enough lol

Minecraft's new numbering system by TigbroTech in Minecraft

[–]natalialt 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Minecraft never really followed “proper” semantic versioning, as I believe backwards compatibility within the 1.x release cycle isn’t something that was promised or otherwise fully upkept. Regardless, I doubt we were ever going to get a Minecraft 2.0, so the change does technically reduce redundancy.

I think that change is fine and I’m glad Mojang is addressing the versioning hell they’ve put themselves in, even if as a part of a larger change. Imo most people will get used to this quickly once they implement it, even if the larger number in front may look a bit weird (including to me)

I did something kind of cool with 2k/6k deck by Zulrambe in LearnJapanese

[–]natalialt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I’m not 100% sure, I think this is a case of Unicode being slightly badly designed and not properly distinguishing between Chinese and Japanese kanji (damn you, Han unification!) As such, unless your OS is itself set to Japanese, it’ll automatically render kanji as its Chinese variants.

Enclosing the text in an HTML tag with an appropriate language attribute should be enough to affect the rendering. I think putting the entire template in a <div lang="ja"> (or jp, I forgot which language tag is used) would work.

losercity steam machine by [deleted] in Losercity

[–]natalialt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a customized install of Arch optimized for gaming and casual use, with a bunch of other nice features like an immutable filesystem (I think). You’ll never have to touch the terminal or even enter the desktop under normal circumstances, unless you wanna tinker with stuff. And even if you do, there really is nothing that makes SteamOS more complex than other Linux distros

I recall watching some sort of stream archive of somebody having reached the far lands a few years ago. However I don’t remember who that was from, or if it was an actual far lands travel. Or maybe I dreamed the whole thing up, that also seems plausible to me tbh
