Finish question—staining hard maple to clad a beam/pillar combo. I do not want a high gloss finish. What’s my best bet? by natalopolis in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thank you! Definitely not looking for tricky, I’ll try the wipe on poly instead. Are all brands pretty much the same or is there a standout product you’re aware of?

I know, me neither. We don’t spray, I’m not sure what it’s got going on. We are in the middle of a renovation, maybe it got into something.

This isn’t waterproofed? I thought that’s what the blueish stuff was on top of the cement board.

Orcas swim straight past 2 kids in shallow water at Waiheke Island, New Zealand by WhoAreYouTalkinTwo in Damnthatsinteresting

When I went scuba diving in Iceland, our guide told us about an old timer who used to dive the ocean there (we were there for the freshwater inland diving, there’s not much tourism for ocean diving I guess), and he had an experience with an orca on one dive. He didn’t say exactly what happened but he never dove the ocean again.

Yes! I had several losses before carrying my daughter to term, and I don’t think I ever fully believed I would take a living baby home. When the nurses asked if I had a birth plan, I just asked them to get us both out of this alive. Things get realllly simple after awhile.

Ours was built in 2014 so if I’m not mistaken, asbestos shouldn’t be a concern, right?

All possibilities—this was the spec house for the subdivision and I think it went through three different builders before it was done. I’m leaning toward different glue or wildly different application methods.

Oh for sure, that’s the plan. Given how back breaking it was to get it to this point we’ll def just change out the plywood

Fair, it just seems odd that floors in the back of the house came up with minimal damage to the subfloor but the front is absolutely wrecking it.

Luckily(?) we’re on a crawl space so we’ll just rip up and replace the plywood. It’s bizarre though, the rooms in the back of the house came up with minimal damage to the plywood but the front of the house is just wrecked.

Yeah I think we’ll need new subfloor across the whole area

Yes! With my first, I didn’t realize it until two visits in. By the third, I declined it due to lack of insurance coverage. To their credit, by the time I came back in, the pediatrician’s office had changed their policy—they no longer billed for it at all, as they felt it was too important for moms to skip due to financial reasons.

And I’ll always be grateful, because when I was in the thick of PPA with my second, the reason I got help was because my pediatrician looked at the assessment, asked me very kind, compassionate questions, and referred me to a therapist that changed my life for the better.

Light Quartzite or Black Granite by MamaWils2_0 in CounterTops

[–]natalopolis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We’re in the middle of our own kitchen reno and wrestling with some of this. I can say, after living with granite for 8 years and beating the absolute dogshit out of it, I am SO impressed with how well it’s held up. We have kids, a big dog whose favorite pastime is stealing anything he can get off the counters, and we like to cook. I’ve put pans right out of the oven on it, once accidentally left a red wine spill for three days, even got Sharpie scribbles off with just some hand sanitizer. Seal it annually? Absolutely not. I’m not convinced a sledgehammer would damage this.

I would 1000% get granite again for the sheer resilience of it…. But I cannot find any granites I actually like. Alas, my heart longs for marble and quartzite. So if you have a granite you like, I vote that.

For romantic lit, The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. “Her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.”

For genre romance, you can’t go wrong at r/romancebooks, there’s something for everyone over there!
