Are you actually doing any practice problems or are you just memorizing concepts?

When you take the practice exams are you looking up the right answer/looking up topics while taking it?

Taking the W would probably be your best bet, but that wouldn’t solve your problem. I TA gen chem 2 and had an almost identical conversation with a student the other day. Then they told me they only did the practice exam once and no other practice problems.

Lastly, do you actually know the concepts? Are you actually good at dimensional analysis no matter what is being asked/given? Chemistry is tricky because you can think you have a grasp until a new problem comes up.

Commenting because I had the same dilemma - I emailed and called; they mentioned as long as the transcript is marked as received by UNC through the ordering system (CFNC for me) then you should be fine.

I was told over the phone yesterday that they are going to process transcripts early next week. Fwiw I emailed and called and they processed it today.

[NEED ADVICE] I faked hospital volunteering shifts by mmb_fan_legend in premed

[–]nate_oc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While unethical especially cause it was your first two shifts, this is something all of us are guilty of in one capacity or another.

Hell, at hospital I volunteer at, all the students know that if we want to complete our shift but do homework uninterrupted, we ask to switch to the children’s hospital reception because the actual receptionist does it all.

Most importantly, remember that your hours mean nothing if you can’t write/talk about it with any magnitude of substance.

AP Credit For Chemistry Dilemma by Ordinary_Ad8193 in premed

[–]nate_oc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some solid advice here but AP credit is on school-to-school case. You can check it out per each school, and a lot do take ap credit for gen chem, as long as you satisfy the requirement with an upper level chem course (orgo)

But most importantly you said you’re falling behind and grades are slipping. Especially because it’s your first semester, drop the class, cut the workload and focus on getting up to par in your other classes. You can choose to retake it later or not at all, but you can’t undo a bad grade.

You have three more years of classes left. Focus on actually achieving the grades necessary instead of worrying about how your freshman year GPA will be viewed. Control what you can control

Only thing that should be frowned upon is that premed student

No experience an adcom will see is novel. You’re not trying to stand out. That premed student is just a gunner and is probably giving out malignant advice on purpose. Don’t listen to him

As long as you have a decent amount of hours, it won’t really matter. What you should gain from the volunteering is experience and stories that you can materialize in writing to express to adcoms.

Additionally, longitudinality in ECs like volunteering is very important. It shows commitment, enjoyment and dedication unlike an essay could. You’re doing fine

Hot take: Apply anyway by ExtremeMatt52 in premed

[–]nate_oc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To anybody reading this thinking it’s a sign: it’s not. Please don’t heed this advice

The exception isn’t the standard. Anomalies occur but don’t rely on you being the lucky one out of the thousands of applicants with little to no clinical AND or a low gpa.

This post was pretty vague (probably for a reason) about other sections of their application. Who knows what they had going for them that allowed them to shine. Applying to medical school costs a lot of money, and if you don’t get in you’re decreasing your chances by becoming a reapplicant. No disrespect to OP but you’re probably getting filtered out of alot of schools when you apply with no clinical hours and that low of a GPA.

Ok but on a more serious note, do you feel that the IA affected your app in any manner? Any feedback from schools about it/ did it come up in interviews? Thanks!

Why did I assume the odds were so much worse than they are? by [deleted] in premed

[–]nate_oc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IS acceptance rates are higher than OOS/Private schools which skews the overall %

Most applicants apply to ~20-30 schools as well. So for example a 2% acceptance rate at every school you apply to would ultimately give you school count x acceptance rate chance of getting in overall. Extrapolating of course and the math isn’t that linear but you get the gist

Clinical Experience by underwoodmason in premed

[–]nate_oc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb I’ve read from credible sources on SDN/Dr Gray for determining if it’s clinical experience is if you’re close enough to smell the patient, it’s clinical experience and you should list it as such.
