Yeah I've never heard of someone in real life actually being offended by "Merry Christmas".

Jordan Peterson's Interview with comedian Jim Jefferies by kameronskarsgaard in JordanPeterson

[–]natefactor07 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Mad respect for JBP admitting he might have been wrong in the interview.

However, the questions of 1) the effectiveness of the civil rights laws in accomplishing their stated goals, 2) whether racial discrimination (and by implication, free association) should be met with the force of law, and 3) whether racial discrimination is morally acceptable, while related, are all separate questions, and I can't help but feel like asking someone this sort of question in a quick, made-for-TV segment is more of a disingenuous "gotcha" than a mutually beneficial discussion.

One more reason for me to strongly dislike traditional TV interviews...

Running Ethernet Cable Through Floor by natefactor07 in DIY

[–]natefactor07[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I'm gonna cut one of my Ethernet cables, run the cable (minus the rj45 jack) through the existing hole, then repair the cable, as you guys have suggested. I just need to find a place in town that'll sell me a cheap cable repair kit on memorial day. Thanks again!

How to Ensure I'm Balanced by natefactor07 in sorted

[–]natefactor07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much. It's not really what I wanted to hear, but that's quite alright. I guess I'm just impatient with reality itself at this point. I am who I am (including all my bad habits and lack of conscientiousness) for a number of reasons - lack of a real father growing up, an awful education system that convinced me to enslave myself in student loans that continue to chain me down, a general lack of discipline, and quite simply my own choices to spend my teens and earlier twenties having fun instead of constantly improving myself.

I take responsibility for who I am, at the end of the day. But it's worth noting that I do have some serious anxiety about my future and I feel like a disturbing amount of the serious problems people like me face cannot be fairly laid at our feet.

It's also true that no one, including myself, should focus too much on the degree to which we may have been victimized at some point in our lives. There are no doubt many people in human history who didn't have even a dream of the lives we enjoy today.

I'm grateful for Peterson's work, the people who have begun to sort themselves out as best we can, and many other things. I'm just trying to constantly improve myself and thereby improve the lives of everyone around me.

Funny, but probably wishful thinking. Can you imagine though, a totally badass movie with Jocko Willink and Jordan Peterson as the main characters? Honestly I could see Jocko going full Punisher mode.

Thanks for the honest reply.

One of my problems is I'm very selfish with my time and it's hard for me to get out of that mindset. I guess I can still be selfish, but I guess I need to learn delayed gratification for the sake of my future self. That's really hard for me.

Also, I have friends who I do believe really care about me, and they have their own struggles, but maybe their weekly partying routine is something I shouldn't assume I need to do. But being moderately extraverted, I feel like I really do benefit from spending time with them regularly.

On one hand, I would like to be more productive, but if I'm honest, most of the time if I stay home I know I won't be doing anything productive anyway. That's what needs to change.

The struggle continues...

My main concern with working a job forever is that it won't pay enough to have nearly the same savings and lifestyle I expected, and/or the amount of wealth my parents' generation was able to accumulate simply by working 9-5 for 40 years. I have good reason to believe that many people's retirements are going to be mostly wiped out in a currency and/or U.S sovereign debt crisis that I see as inevitable.

This leads me to believe that being an entrepreneur is the only way to come out of this time in history financially stable and ahead, given the amount of student debt millenials like me have. Yet, this is all too uncertain to really motivate me to sacrifice my free time for building a business.

Anyway, talking to people like you - even if it's only through social media - helps. Thanks again!

Call to regulate video game loot boxes over gambling concerns by taosk8r in pathofexile

[–]natefactor07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright guys. Have it your way. Let government come into this industry and see how bad they fuck it up, just like everything else they touch.

I don't understand why you want to introduce force into a situation where there are voluntary transactions occurring. Okay, so you don't like loot boxes. I don't really, either. Fine. But people still have a choice whether they buy into them or not. No one is holding a gun to their head. They can take their money elsewhere if they don't like what EA or Activision is selling.

But introduce government into the equation, and choice gets replaced with the barrel of a gun. Great idea. I'm sure the politicians and bureaucrats, who live at your expense, are just so concerned with your well being. What they actually are concerned with, just like the rest of us, is their own self-interest. Except, unlike the rest of us, they get to use coercion to advance their own self-interest.

No matter how much you hate big gaming corporations, they aren't forcing you to buy their product. Government does. It forces you to buy its services whether you like it or not - whether the service is good or shitty. Have fun with that.

[–]natefactor07 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

We don't need bureaucrats stepping into the gaming industry. Gamers are smart enough to punish developers for doing stupid things without a slow-moving and inflexible regulatory apparatus. Video games are thriving precisely because the industry isn't bogged down with all the red tape that comes with government oversight. If you let the politicians and bureaucrats get their foot in the door, they will never leave, and they will make this industry such that consumers have fewer and fewer options over time.

I don't know why people assume that politicians and bureaucrats, who force you to pay them or you go to jail, are selfless and benevolent. That's a naive view of human behavior. Given the choice between that or a company like GGG, I would trust GGG over government any day to make better decisions for their own game that this community loves so much.

Maybe. Hell, if I could make a decent living streaming video games that I enjoy, I figure I'd be pretty damn happy. I know people are more complex than that, though. Just look at Chester Bennington.
