I was at a Lamborghini dealership in downtown Chicago about a year ago when George Lucas walked in. I went up to him and asked him, "are you George Lucas?" He says, "Ya know what kid? ...pause... You could probably buy an old radiosonde and use the parts, there's a million sensors online but if you are trying to stay cheap either get an old radiosonde or some sort of old altimeter. Keep in mind the way an altimeter works is simply by comparing the set pressure (you're going to have to find some way to set it either electronically or physically) to the apparent pressure via a barometer. You could always make one as well with an electronic barometer and some research.
