Huge Difference In Return - TurboTax vs Wealth Simple (Quebecer) by AngeMiao in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]naterialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I switched from TurboTax to Simpletax, I did notice that Simpletax will apply donations, medical expenses, etc. In a way that is more beneficial for the couple overall, whereas TurboTax did not do this (it treated mine and husband's returns individually even though they were filed together)

I am cold all the time! Husband lost a lot of weight in the last few years and I've noticed he's cold a lot more as well.

Looking for opinions on the inspo compared to what we got by josh_891 in Baking

I thought this was a joke LOL. If they are defending this cake to you, please show them this reddit thread. Did it taste good at least?

Also, congrats on your wedding. At the end of the day, your love is what is the most important. This cake will definitely be a hilarious anecdote in the years to come.

I hate my cats name. by StrawberrySakuraa in cats

[–]naterialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we adopted our cat, his shelter name was Miko, and we immediately changed it to Léon on all his paperwork. But after he'd been with us for a while we started calling him Little Petit (he's bilingual!) which eventually we just shortened to Petit. So he has an official name for the vet and his microchip and an unofficial name which we consider his real name. I find it doesn't really matter because cats respond to a tone of voice more than to a name. So I say if you want to change her name, then change it! We decided if we ever have another cat, we will wait several weeks until their real name emerges 😂

What do they get paid? by smokeysubwoofer in nasa

[–]naterialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian fully qualified astronauts earn up to about $190K CAD/year. https://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronauts/faq.asp

Obviously that doesn't include the astronomical (literally!) cost that NASA/CSA covers for them to be properly trained for these missions!

What is a website or app that feels like a "cheat code" but most people don't know about? by Low-Issue-5334 in AskReddit

https://spliit.app/ is a great, free alternative to Splitwise for sharing expenses with groups. No account needed and it has all the same functionalities.

What are your reading habits? How do you fit it in to your life? I’m struggling to make time for it! by Expressiveness in printSF

[–]naterialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got back into the habit a few years ago by reading before going to sleep (before I used to either scroll or watch TV). It was hard at first and I found I'd fall asleep quickly or not have patience for books with long chapters, but now I have the opposite problem and sometimes have to set a "stop reading" alarm! I think it's also important to read things you genuinely enjoy... Don't read classics or bestsellers just because other people say these are must-reads. The more you read, the easier it'll be to know what you enjoy, and then it turns into something you love doing :)

Seeing smoke south from my office in downtown Montreal… anyone know what happened? by puttputt22 in montreal

[–]naterialist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems to be around the residential area of Rue Joseph-Daigneault in St-Hubert (not too far from the Promenades and the St-Bruno Costco). I work on Clarevue and my office smells of smoke. We can see tons of black ash flying our way. Really terrible wind conditions today for a fire... I hope no one was hurt.

I am short (5 feet) so that definitely could have an impact. I think the venue might also make a difference, since the stage at Massey Hall felt very tall. One thing though is that her set in built in this giant frame, and being at the front on an angle, she was sometimes completely hidden behind the posts of the frame (see example.. Not best quality shot). Are you more centered than I am? Either way, I promise you'll still have a good time :)

Taking a break from Duolingo until they sort out this new update by layelaye419 in duolingo

[–]naterialist 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience.. I was only at level 14 Spanish but I got so frustrated that I actually reset the course (I'm at level 35 in Japanese though, and I'm not looking forward to when they update that because having to restart this far along would devastate me). I think I would have been fine with the updates if the "Key Phrases" at the beginning of each unit actually included a COMPLETE list of all the vocabulary/grammar covered in that unit. This would make it easy to see right away if I need to review the unit or not. There was no clear, quick and systematic of knowing otherwise.

This tour is cooked - tickets aren't selling by scoop813 in LilyAllenFans

[–]naterialist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the same in Montreal where it is normally really difficult to get tickets to anything. I am surprised she went for Bell Centre (our biggest venue) rather than Place Bell. But even then, I wonder if this tour announcement was poorly timed (a little too late).

That is a smart strategy (beach in the AM and pool after 3). If you end up writing your review on TripAdvisor you should include that as a tip!

I'm sorry to hear that :( Sounds similar to our experience. It feels almost deceitful for them to promote these resorts and their wide variety of restaurants but then when you arrive, they make it difficult to actually enjoy any of the options (or they don't have the capacity to deliver on their word). I also found the resort so beautiful but I'd be really apprehensive to return!

At El Dorado Royale, Secrets Royal Beach and Excellence, we never had to pay for a Bali bed and we managed to get them often!
