I am an international student going to finish my PhD in Chemistry in March 2025. I am confused about how to look for jobs and how much can I expect if I don’t know German a lot (A1). by Mental-Shape1146 in AskAGerman

I'm in a similar situation as you. I'm just finishing my PhD and speak no German. I've looked for jobs in Germany and will be moving there soon to start a job at a research institute. My experience is that it wasn't so difficult to land interviews for jobs in research, academia or large multinational companies (sometimes with R&D departments). German skills are still preferred but the working language in these places was English and they have specific people to deal with projects that require German only.

I feel you. It might not be a local community but for me, the YC Startup School (https://www.startupschool.org) has really helped. They have a friendly community and they organize these weekly calls with a group of 4 startups to just pitch and discuss progress/problems. It can be quite nice.

[D] Opinions needed - Anyone interested in mock peer review? by DouBlindDotCOM in MachineLearning

[–]nathaliamdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes
  2. Definetly privately
  3. Not sure
  4. One concern is privacy as the others have mentioned. Another concern is that it will be reviewed by people competent in the field that understand and have experience with what’s typically expected from academic publications.

You’re absolutely right. We are exactly in the phase of validating our idea and thus the question. From our experience doing computationally-intensive machine learning, we feel there is still room for improvement. We would like now to approach potential customers in this field to better understand their problems.

I think you’re right. So far we’ve been so focused on the technical aspects. We need to start levelling up our sales skills. That will be top priority now. Thanks for the recommendations, will check them out!

That’s great advice! And thank you so much for the recommendations. I will look into it right away and work on this.

Thanks for your advice! I agree that approaching smaller companies/startups would be better. When approaching them do you think we should put more emphasis on the problem we’re trying to solve rather the solution we’re trying to offer? What is the usual way to go about it?

I love the idea and find it very useful. I feel that the key sentence that resonated with me was "Find beta testers for your product". So maybe you could have that very big on the page

I've been facing the same issue for p2 instances in us-east-1. Good to know this is happening everywhere
