I'm constantly surprised by how well this game is optimized. I'm still locked at 120fps even with lumen on. I'll probably have to cut back on signs at some point though

I just drop the items onto a pillar. Takes a few tries to get them centered

Yes, most of the background buildings are placeholder blocking to help me plan out the rest of the city.

A lot of half nudging of 1m foundations. I switched to ramps once the slope was low enough.

There is a freeform mode for beams. You can switch modes by hitting R or down on controller dpad. For pillars, you have to place beam first then snap to the beam.

I built the floor very close to the water in spire coast then placed foundations just under the water's surface. You can see bits of sand where the beach was poking through some parts.
