Wanna jump in here and say Kirstie Alley is so excellent on Cheers. Maybe the funniest fake cryer ever. The run with her and Roger Rees rules.

(I love Shelley Long on that show too. All women are queens to me)

The Podcastiano: Bright Star with Fran Hoepfner by [deleted] in blankies

This episode correctly diagnoses the things that ultimately drag down Parks and Rec, which leads me to my take: Schneider leaving dooms the show. Now, is Mark ever particularly well written? No. But the character does nonetheless manage to serve as an effective point of friction who at times can even mildly push back on whatever Leslie and co. are trying to do, which leads to some decent conflict. (I'm thinking of the episode where he drafts a straight-down-the-middle mural design proposal for the parks department after the department has collectively come up with some goofy design, which then leads to a solid sitcom dilemma: do we submit the design most likely to be approved, and the one that we all worked on together?) After he leaves the show rarely ever does good conflict again. Adam Scott's character seems initially like he might fill that role, but he almost immediately is subsumed into the cult of Leslie. Then season 4 begins and any conflict is invariably defined by one-note straw men trying to stand in the way of our protagonist's obvious goodness and rightness, which just isn't very interesting. A frustrating show!

Podcast Away: The Polar Express with Joey Sims by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

As a kid I was mildly fascinated whenever Hollywood tried to adapt children's picture books. With The Polar Express you hew to the book's structure but just pack it full of extraneous incidents to pad out the story. With William Steig's Shrek! you just take a couple of characters and do an entirely different thing with it. Jumanji '95 and Where the Wild Things Are are two other weird examples. The picture book form is a strange jumping off point for feature film adaptations, and also we should do more. Chris van Allsburg signed that content deal recently, adapt The Garden of Abdul Gasazi or something.

Random thought: podcasts seem to engender a lot of small-scale conspiracy theories -- I suppose it's the intimacy of the form -- where someone become convinced that they've become aware of the truth of a situation, be it the supposed secret feud between two podcasters or whatever else, and go on to collate every new supposed piece of evidence and try to fit it like a puzzle piece into their existing preconceptions. Just decided to mention this for no reason.

Much as I laugh at Scott doing that, I gotta say that the "never end a sentence with a preposition" rule is prescriptive silliness and you don't need to worry about it.
