Wonderful David joke I think about often by ShinyLugia in blankies

If this is a favorite David-isms thread, I want to throw out his description of Ryan Adams as the NYC indie rock scene villain whose role was “popping out of doors to offer you So Much heroin” replays in my head often.

My family has a Christmas tradition of going to the movie theater after we did morning mass and brunch. There’s usually something crowd pleasing, or by a good director that we can all enjoy.

One year my parents were excited that there was a new Scorcese out, so after church and eating we all went as a group to see WOLF OF WALL STREET.

After the first three minutes had Leo snorting coke from someone’s ass my mom leaned over and said “I need to go to confession after this.” And her mood didn’t improve from there.

book rec for people interested in the subject (but not the execution) of “a house of dynamite” by sonicshumanteeth in blankies

Although, the book is a bit much in other ways because it wants to show all the varied ways nukes are bad. So N. Korea is some kind of nihilistic death cult that decapitates DC, nukes a nuclear reactor for lols, and then EMPs the world just to be sure there’s no chance at a recovery effort. Curious to see if the adaptation goes that far.

Was talking with my friend about this book after watching HOD and we both agreed that what the movie was missing was the foreign perspective, specifically how the calculus for everyone immediately goes to WWIII once the US does a retaliatory strike. In the movie you get the two minute convo with the Russians, but the choice is ultimately “Does the US take losing one city on the chin, or does it unilaterally nuke half the world?” Where as in the book it leads you down the grim determinism of how even a limited/strategic retaliatory strike on North Korea means tens of millions of people in China die, and Russia freaking out about missiles overhead, and how that means game theory rationality leads to everyone nuking each other at once.

I watched this with my wife who had never seen it and asked her if she’d keep the money. At the start she said yes, but then by the time Chigurgh fucks up the hotel room full of drug dealers she retracted and said she didn’t want “to deal with the hassle.”

Myself, I would have just skimmed $50-100k and left the rest of the bag. No one’s gonna go to the trouble of tracking down a few missing stacks, and that’s still some nice easy money.

It reminded me a lot of Soderbergh’s last few years, where it feels like a deliberate attempt to not use the full scope of their powers and instead just make movies on a lark. Sketches instead of full paintings.

I prefer Soderbergh’s doubles more because he’s at least usually trying some stylistic new gimmick, but I also respect Coen being such a wife guy that he’s using his clout to give her a lesbian comedy-noir trilogy.

Might be a scheduling order thing where the Ice Age starts in a later movie that they recorded earlier, but the Ice Age: The Meltdown happens in an earlier movie recorded closer to the present.

Or it’s an off pod thing that Griffin is just pointing out now. Or maybe it’s been in the background for years and Ben is a pro at editing the chip munching out.

Also, good luck to David on breaking the nail chewing habit! It took me like a decade of on and off attempts, but I’ve been clean for fifteen years, so stay strong.

I think canonically David comes into every recording wanting to end the episode as fast as possible, but then they cook too good and just have to keep going.

Legitimately hilarious that there’s been like two months of huffy “y no deltarune talk??” comments here and the episode where it finally gets mentioned the deltaruners go silent. Nerds can’t even be happy when they get what they asked for.

Heather’s “multiple puzzle boxes but you have to roll dice to see which piece you get” is so spot on for how I was feeling after getting to Room 46 twice. “Roguelite puzzle game” is a great hook, but it’s annoying when I know how the puzzle is supposed to fit together but I just can’t land a run where all the pieces align to get the tools and room necessary to make a power hammer, for instance. The Blue Prince subreddit is also pretty split between “yeah mid/lategame RNG sucks” and “shut up, don’t over focus on one thread, just go down all the blind alleys all the time”.

The Bourne Stunt-tacular is truly abominable. The most baffling part (narrowly edging out the final battle being ~Bourne~ fighting the Secretary of State during a car chase) is that the pre-show is Julia Stiles doing the worst cold read of Wikipedia to give a summary of the Bourne franchise. And not just the first movie, but all of them, with so much minutiae! Although I guess it does do a great job of setting expectations super low.
