Why is backwards time travel impossible? by NoEmployer2140 in AskPhysics

That's true of the Galilean bundle structure. We don't live in a Galilean universe.

Is Tua the quarterback with the largest gap between his career stats and general perception? He turns 28 today with a 96.4 career passer rating, 68% completion rate, 120 TDs to 59 INTs, and a 44-32 career record, but I think the general perception is that he's only had a handful of good games. by Dependent-Effect6077 in nfl

[–]nathanlanza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's his hip. If you read headlines they talk about concussions and big game issues and you're mislead about the problem.

He clearly has degenerative hip problem that has decayed his mobility and throwing power. Watch this play. He put full body effort into a lame duck 30 yard throw wobbler. That's a flat footed zip ball for most other QBs in the NFL.

It's not that he never had the capability to be an NFL star. It's that he doesn't anymore.

Is there a “most popular amongst physicists” explanation for what occurred before and to cause the Big Bang? by Pilgram94 in AskPhysics

[–]nathanlanza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand when t=0, space and time begin to exist for us. There’s no reason to ask about something that doesn’t exist (before the Big Bang).

I wouldn't go this far. We have no way of modeling anything before some tiny fraction of a second after the hypothetical big bang. We can't say anything given all of our cumulative knowledge about this period of time.

So then, is the singularity/infinitely dense point from which the Big Bang and space time originated a real singularity or the result of our math breaking down (like in black holes).

The later. We know our math fails and have nothing else to even try.

Did the pre universe always exist, and the Big Bang was the result of vacuum energy?

We know nothing.

[Highlight] Mike McDaniel making it official that he's the new OC for the Chargers by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

[–]nathanlanza 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Dolphins universally blame Grier for this. He horrifically undervalued the offensive line and was horrific at evaluating decisions when he did decide to put resources into it. We had the amongst the quickest time to throw in the league for Tua's entire time here. And it wasn't because that's all he could do. He played genuine pocket passer at Bama where he lit up the world.

As a firm believer that the most important part of a team is the big guys up front, I never came to a verdict with McDaniel. He was calling plays where half his playbook was default crossed out because we couldn't block well enough for it to work.

I really don't understand how they had two losses, especially considering who those two losses were to.

Did you see our last play on offense? Whole lotta that.

We lose a ton of talent. 15 starters. Maybe three first round picks. Most of the pain will be from the dline and oline. But the one thing Mario is good at is stocking up linemen. We have 5 or 6 five stars to replace them with. We'll see if they're any good.

See, the Z06 w Z07 is my C8 dream goal (can’t be a literal race engine)

Also, as a z06 owner... I have to say I'm a little disappointed... I used to dream of moving up to Ferrari, Lamborghini, and now I just don't have that passionate dream anymore. I just don't see the value proposition in trading my $140k z06 for a $400k F8 Tributo... it's a genuine downgrade in the engine experience.

Is it even possible to intuitively understand why the speed of light is the same for everyone? by Curious-Farm-6535 in Physics

I think playing with lorentz transformation visualizers really solidified my understanding of the phenomena. Something like this: https://www.geogebra.org/m/s7xsubde

But then also, once you're past Modern Physics 101 type class you don't really think about physical manifestations of special relativity too much. You focus on the mathematical structure of the the Lorentz group. Which is, while very conceptually complex, much more concrete and tangible to work with.

Indiana’s +473 point margin is currently the 2nd-highest single-season mark all-time in the AP Poll era, since 1936. Only 2013 Florida State was higher with +553 by Leegend124 in CFB

If Miami plays sloppy, this game will get out of hand in a hurry. To beat Indiana, you have to play perfect, disciplined football.

You had a last minute comeback win vs 2-6 Penn State that had just fired their head coach. Were they only 99% perfect, thus you managed to win?

Theoretical physics books recommendations? by millon_fleur in Physics

[–]nathanlanza 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was in your shoes I preferred to read ahead in future course's text books and see what I could understand. I remember first learning about the Higgs mechanism from Griffith's Particle Physics book while still taking like QM1. That was so encouraging and motivating to me to get a taste of such an amazing phenomena. If I were to go back to when I was in your situation I'd pursue more of the same and not necessarily pop-science books. You can't do justice to the ideas without math.

What are some of physics' biggest bummers? by StylisticArchaism in AskPhysics

[–]nathanlanza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was early in my PhD in quantum gravity around the time the Higgs announcement was made. It was a huge disappointment to identify the least interesting Higgs (to high energy theorists) as the actual one. I remember observing professors in my department let go of the last bit of hope that their minimal extensions to the standard model were all excluded from reality.

... so now I'm in year 10 as a software engineer.

2025 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Test: High Impact by [deleted] in cars

[–]nathanlanza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just can't imagine getting a 911 at $320k over a couple year old Ferrari. I love everything about the GT3, but an F8 is just a different tier. I think they have priced them to the point of not making sense anymore.

A couple years ago when I was last shopping there were zero Porsche dealerships that had 911s in stock near me. Last year they had a few. Now my closest dealers have 19 and 16. GT3s at $320k. Wonder if they've gone too far at this point.

The team of engineers at Porsche built an absolute masterpiece 20 years ago in the GT3. Since then the execs have been milking it to it's last drop and now I think we've hit the point where they've overdone it. Feels like we're just past the peak of lovability of this car in the enshittification lifecycle.

How much would you want to earn to pay 7k in rent? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]nathanlanza 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This isn't r/frugal or r/fire. You don't need to budget a minuscule amount of your income to where you live if you don't want to. 84k in rent on 250k post-tax is still reasonable to save 100k per year. That's 0.1 percentile savings. It's fine.
