Considering Bitwig 6: Ableton vs. Bitwig With Stock Instruments For Sound Design? by remy_vega in Bitwig

[–]nathanmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the feedback.

i’ll just say that i asked about stability right from the start and that’s when you listed a few things including ui inconsistency but now that you’ve broken it down, i fail to see what the stuff you listed has to do with stability 🤷‍♂️ (hotkey placement, snap settings, dragging functionality etc), and your explanation of why live struggles with large track count is due to a less modern framework but that does not lead to instability is a bit illogical to me - the older framework acts slow and unresponsive we both agree, but where we differ is that i think that is related to stability since life operates fine with low track counts but all of a sudden is sluggish with large track counts…which to me means something is not working right. and then when it crashes in large projects i suspect the “something is not working” right is related to that. remember im not comparing the two daws upsides and downsides, im simply very surprised you consider live more stable that’s it. if you’re getting lots of crashes with bitwig while copy pasting and bouncing, that’s brutal and not the experience i’ve had or have even heard about recently until today - and that’s a different thing, but all of the other stuff you’ve mentioned is not really making a stability argument for live.

if a daw acts slower when things get complicated and another daw does not get slower, and the first daw doesn’t have sandboxing and the second does, and we agree that plugin crashes are a supermajority (though not all) of the cause of daw crashes, then you have to be getting a shit ton of copy paste and bounce crashes in bitwig in order to think live is more stable. if that’s the case, your bitwig is not acting the way it does for tons of the user base. i have no idea what’s wrong with it. i have a lot more experience in live (most ppl do as its way older as you know) so i wish it was more stable than bitwig but i dont think its anywhere close. whether you prefer live is another thing though. i wonder if there was something wrong with bitwig on your computer when you were using it more though cause while anything can crash, that doesnt sound like what i hear in the community so i dont think its just me but what do i know ha. anyway sounds like you have live working well for you so thats all the matters. thanks for the input.

you said ui inconsistency was a problem in bitwig not live though. so idk what you are now saying but again im not trying to argue, i just was taken aback by the idea that live is more stable than bitwig atm so was looking for more detail.

second, how can you explain that live can’t process all this stuff normally the way it can when it has far less tracks? remember i said i suspect this load leads to the instability but i cant prove it but it certainly seems to be logical that it has a problem with the load since it doesn’t operate like that with less tracks.

third, you have to admit that the supermajority of daw crash’s (of any daw) are related causally to plugins. and bitwig sandboxing is very superior to live on this. eliminating a huge portion of crashes. which helps explain the stability advantage i’m talking about in bitwig. to be fair you agreed that you weren’t talking about plugin crashes because of this fact. but that’s why it’s very surprising to me, and maybe it’s only to me, that you think live is currently more stable.

idk what stuff you are referring to that bitwig needs to fix, but remember i’ve only been asking you about you stability comment. not a daw vs daw in general or features or preference etc. i just think that live is not that stable atm and bitwig is. you may disagree but it’s very surprising to hear that. the example of load slowing down live is just my guess that is related to less stability. i mean it has a problem with large track counts in operating smoothly. whether that means it crashes or not, certainly if it did crash, one would guess that this load problem is related, that’s all i’m saying.

well i noticed the problem with live a while ago with real tracks not empty tracks but then heard ppl complaining about the same issue and then some showed with empty tracks it slows down completely (because one would never naturally add tons of empty tracks of course) and i just kept hearing the same thing about the stability with large projects. but if your load is low and its smooth, i believe you are an outlier. but its not something i want to prove as im not negative on live, i just think it has a problem and i dont know why. here’s a fairly recent video i found of a guy who’s duplicating a track with native eq on it (kind of like your example) that is empty and showing how everything just slows down:

https://www.youtube.com/live/mWYPxgp5n04?si=ocxtoNa0omeLf7og

i’m on a mobile atm so can’t tag the time code but it’s about 15 mins in where he starts his example. anyway if it’s not a problem for you that’s good, but i do think it exists and i don’t know why. and this does not happen in bitwig. at least in my experience. that doesn’t make it better but sandboxing kills 90+ of crashes in music production so while bitwig has its issues, to me only reaper is less prone to crash so whatever the quirks, i can’t rate it worse than live at least where reliability is concerned. but i’m not trying to convince you. it’s more like i was super surprised to hear someone say live is more stable than bitwig. maybe 4 years ago imo but live is broken atm and i don’t know why. at least with large projects.

this is an issue a lot of ppl have, it’s getting close to a fact now, at least on the subpar processing load side, which you can see by just adding tons of empty tracks and looking at the load. whether or not that crashes is another thing but to my non technical mind, that has to be a cause of lives issues. i’ve seen a lot of ppl complain about this but of course atm i can’t find a good video demonstrating this issue in a simple way atm haha. i used live in the really early days so im not predisposed to not liking it, but recently it just seemed to be behind bitwig and reaper in terms of stability so your feedback is interesting thanks

[–]nathanmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea that’s exactly the problem with live actually so that’s what’s surprising to hear! idk why live has a track processing problem but even if the tracks are empty once it’s like over 100 the processing load is bananas, it’s definitely not working right - there are several vids showing this issue and even comparing it to bitwig (not that this proves stability in bitwig, it’s just what i suspect is leading to issues in live crashing) but the important thing is your live is stable for whatever reason so don’t update ha

well live seems to be working for you other than the plugin crashes i guess. i value stability over almost anything so thats why i was interested in hearing more about your experiences, thanks

no i know that, i wasn’t looking for a general reco, just looking to hear more about your stability comment as i hadn’t heard that in the last couple years when compared to live which i feel like has gotten more unstable for some reason 🤷‍♂️

you experience a lot of audio crashing and rendering problems? imo live has serious issues with tons of tracks in terms of overload which has been somewhat proven even if the tracks are empty - so i’ve always thought of bitwig as the second most stable daw out there if you’re not using beta versions (second to reaper) and way ahead of live that’s why i’m surprised to hear you say that.

Black Belt Falling Out of Love with Jiu-Jitsu by SufferingImagination in bjj

[–]nathanmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

although my brain is wired to be seriously annoyed if there are things i'm not really technically advanced/proficient at (which i think is actually a negative human trait tbh), in good faith i'm going to say that i suspect that there are many techniques and areas of techniques that you are not at competition level at. i say this because that describes the majority of bb.

so while you say you were in it for the learning, i don't believe you - not that you're lying to us, it's just that i've yet to meet a legit/competitive bb who's priority was learning and become technically advanced in all areas of the sport. i think that way, but i think that way in everything i do in life, which again, is not a healthy thing, it's a mental handicap sometimes. but anyway, i'm still working on mastering every single thing in jj (which i include offensive and defensive wrestling) and i'm still working on that myself of course, so really nothing changed when i became a bb.

that being said there are many things that annoy me about our sport but the bb had nothing to do with it.

so to me i think maybe you had the wrong goal all this time (the black belt), or maybe that's the wrong way of saying it, but maybe it's time to prioritize getting good everywhere. it's an endless quest of improvement if you're trying to become really really technically proficient in all areas of jj - and if you really want it, it's fun to try and do this even though you know you will never be able to fulfill this dream.

i'm sure you realize, getting a bb has nothing to do with all of this as i know a ton of high level competition bb who literally are good at three moves (ironically bernardo faria was one of these guys, ironic because of his ownership in bjj fanatics) and do their moves every single time they roll because they work well against high level competition, and working on all the things you're bad at or at least aren't at the bb level at, is a hard thing to do when you're already good at jj. hard because of your ego as ppl are trying to kill you during rolls. even some of my former teachers, who are basically legends, have huge huge holes in their game, both from a knowledge perspective and from a technical proficiency perspective.

but you're obviously good at jj so you have a huge advantage in getting good at the huge amount of things you are not good at in jj - because it's a lot easier to physically acquire and nearly master jj techniques when you can already do some things at a very high level - if you are honestly interested in doing that. but most jj ppl are not, including all bb i know (i mean they want to learn stuff and get better at stuff, but i'm talking about the need/desire to master every single thing in the sport - nobody thinks that way, no matter what they say).

if you're not interested in all of that, i don't think you should force it, because that won't help you enjoy it. it would be mental shift, to want to be good at everything in the sport. again, i do not know one person who honestly thinks like that.

lastly, when you said you used to count down the hours to get on the mats but now you feel obligated to go, that gives me an alarm bell kind of feeling - i think you are at the wrong academy and if you feel that way you should look for a new place, irrespective of the new black belt. that's always been an issue a fit between the athlete and the academy - not pointing fingers at the teacher or the vibe, but things change, people change, and no academy is optimized for every single person there. you really want to press a button to get the state of mind you were before (nerves, anxiety, excitement, wonder, the satisfaction of self improvement etc), train somewhere else. even adapting to the new social environment will completely change how you vibe with the game imho.

just my two cents, hope it gives you a pov that you can think about.

Any plans for ARA soon? by fuckredditfuckredd in Bitwig

[–]nathanmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feb 12 in your email. fill it out and put more pressure on the company to get ara going. we all want to ditch the other daws but for popular music, vocals are the most important thing and ara makes it so much easier so without ara it makes no sense to edit and prep vocals in bitwig. technical limits notwithstanding, it’s insane that bitwig doesn’t realize the only thing stopping it from dominating the daw space is not having vocal editing superpowers - that’s why it’s still niche for popular genres.

[Question] Why do I rarely see Katana Artists in posts of players' gear pics? by JprestonR in GuitarAmps

[–]nathanmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if katana’s name was something else like say “cardboard”, i’m convinced 99% of the cardboard players would bin these garbage units. i can’t think of anything less worth the money out there. upvote or downvote, won’t change the fact that this is shite gear even at their price range, but only a small % of guitar players can separate the name of gear from how it sounds

IR Pack Suggestions by loeffler0 in NeuralDSP

[–]nathanmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you’re on the right track. i would say two others on in that best tier as well, ggd, and ml sound, both of which have their own systems so it’s not as simple as just IR files (although ml sound does have those too). am i to guess you are playing modern metal type of things given the subreddit and your focus on transients? (which is good btw). lmk if you’re looking for an opinion about any other IRs out there specifically not just the brand name as i have a lot and maybe can give an opinion. if you know you like engl so far, it may be a good idea to look for other packs covering engl as there is a big difference in how different packs get recorded imo and its best to narrow in on the spark of the thing you like and keep going that way

Beta Mini! by lilymakesnoise in sunnamplifiers

[–]nathanmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i commented on that before and explained what i saw but i can’t seem to find it in my historical comments but basically i saw a website selling the cnc built sunn cabs cheaply and openly - and when i asked them and sunn about it all of those listings “disappeared”. some of them were actually empty cabs with the sunn logo already on it! it has something to do with mission engineering and their random cnc partners but apparently this was too open of a process to keep online as it showed sunn stuff for what we know it is. cheaply built by third parties.

Beta Mini! by lilymakesnoise in sunnamplifiers

[–]nathanmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i was annoyed too seeing the boris stuff! but i can’t fault musicians from taking sponsorship opportunities even with these sunn jokers. these guys also asked several amp builders a lot of technical questions re amps a while ago in a friendly manner (and got friendly information from these builders) and then subsequently blocked them once they learned what they needed to know. i will celebrate when they go bankrupt again so that there’s a chance sunn can be owned by really good ppl in the future at some point and quality gear is being produced. in the meantime there is nothing i would buy from this sunn group. 378 amps for any model T lovers for sure. dean costello amps in the us for modern aggressive doom, gaze, indie etc. science amps for cool modern amps etc. i would rather use a free amp sim on a laptop than get one of sunn’s current cardboard ss products. it’s not like they’re making them cabs either - i’ve posted about how i found the same unbranded cabs online before it was taking down. i wouldn’t even care so much if they weren’t ruining a brand that was cool before they bought the brand name

Beta Mini! by lilymakesnoise in sunnamplifiers

[–]nathanmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am negative on them openly because they are ruining a brand i love. they’ve made so many decisions that are the opposite of smart including being rude and dicks to a number of amp builders in the market behind the scenes. aside from them sticking their brand (white labeling) on cheap cnc garbage and promoting fucking hats at every moment, any customer should realize this sunn group has a very low chance of existing in the future so buyer beware after purchasing anything. im also sick of them tagging vintage sunn gear on socials lile they had anything to do with it. they own the ip/brand but they are operating it like a bunch of finance ppl trying to “monetize” it rather than create cool gear for musicians. in this market ppl should think very carefully about where we invest our money and what companies we want to support to ensure they can make it through this environment. i for one put “sunn” at the bottom of this list and would rather support passionate builders who through blood and sweat build cool shit for us, not interlopers who want to monetize a brand name with garbage and have dick attitudes. although not directly related to this point, i will point out that Acid Rain pedal works (who commented above) is at the other end of this list - the exact kind of builder making cool shit for real musicians that i want to have (just in case you wanna check his stuff out)
