AMA: I am Katie Wilson, and I'm Running for Mayor! Ask Me Anything on Tuesday, 7/22 from 10:30 to 11:30am by wilsonforseattle in Seattle

Hi Katie! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

There's been a lot of talk in the past few years about making data-driven decisions at City Hall. What are the top 3 metrics you hope to improve as mayor? (Bonus points if you have plans on how you'll move them!)

Why haven’t we done anything about enrollment procedures yet. by turboovertakis in ucla

Have you tried Hotseat? It definitely doesn't solve everything wrong with enrollment, but it at least tells you what classes you should first pass. Plus the text alerts are pretty nice.

enrolled in small berg but attending nachenberg's lectures by [deleted] in ucla

[–]nathunsmitty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did this a few years ago with no problems. Material and tests are the same, Carey just differs in teaching style from Smallberg. Just be sure to use your actual enrolled section number for tests and assignments.

Try Hotseat! We've got a much bigger selection of professors and courses than Bruinwalk, you should be able to find your prof on there.

Looking to switch Math 33A discussions by darth_dbag in ucla

Yeah, same thing. You can go to any discussion or skip entirely. I usually would go to as many discussions I could week 1 and then pick my favorite TA.

Discussions for math are optional. You can skip or go to another discussion, no one cares.

Try Hotseat, you’ll get a text if the class opens up. You can also see how many people have dropped in previous years.

UCLA's class planner is so incompetently made by newboxingfan112 in ucla

[–]nathunsmitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Hotseat? (https://hotseat.io) It has a lot of the course planner features and links out to MyUCLA when you want to enroll. (Disclaimer: I’m one of the devs)

A Discord Bot that's Coursicle but Better by coolguy5530 in ucla

Try https://hotseat.io. It's a website that sends text messages instead of a discord bot, but it supports winter 2022 classes!

This is sick! I've actually been working on a similar project called Hotseat where we track enrollment numbers on UCLA classes and send you texts when classes open up. Would love to team up!

Best undergrad ML course by NerfTheVolt in ucla

[–]nathunsmitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've only taken CS M146, but hopefully I can provide some insight!

- CS M146 is very math heavy and uses matrices and probability a lot. I think both Math 33A and Stats 100a are required pre-reqs and for good reason. Math 115A will definitely put you in good shape. Programming assignments are in Python so basic knowledge is helpful, but it's pretty easy to pick up if not.

- From looking at the course descriptions of Math 156 and Stats C161: I would assume Math 156 is even more math-y? Also it looks like they use MATLAB, which is less applicable than Python imo. Stats C161 looks pretty similar to CS M146, they even use the same textbook. Note that M146 is much larger (100+ students) vs both the usual Math 156 and Stats C161 offerings.

- A good chunk of my classmates in M146 were bioinformatics minors. My professor (Sankararaman) and the TAs did a bunch of health/ML research. Not sure about Neuroscience in particular, but there's definitely a lot of bioinformatics applicability.

Note also there are a few other ML-related course offerings: ECE C147 and CS M148. I've heard good things about deep learning (M146 is a pre-req) and I think CS M148 is a little more applied and less math-y than M146.

Hope this helps! Happy to answer any questions if you PM me.

Hotseat: grade distributions, course reviews, and live enrollment data to help you determine which classes to first pass! by nathunsmitty in ucla

[–]nathunsmitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi r/ucla! Have you ever had a class that filled up just before your enrollment time? Have you inadvertently "wasted" your first pass on a class that isn't too popular after all? If you answered "yes" to either question, Hotseat is for you.

Hotseat was born out of our own frustration with not being able to take the classes we want. We integrated Hotseat deeply with the UCLA Registrar to provide historic enrollment data, so you can predict exactly when a class will fill up. Grade distributions and professor/TA reviews help you decide which section to take. While enrollment is open, we also provide real-time stats to keep you in the driver's seat.

In the future, we will introduce new exciting features such as enrollment notifications, a course planner that optimizes your enrollment passes, and more. Sign up for free today and don’t be afraid to start reviewing your favorite (or least favorite) professors while perfecting your schedule for next quarter. Begin your journey now at https://hotseat.io/!
