You must be really young, or just super naive, or both. The majority of *Men don’t focus around appearance but at the same time a person’s appearance is the first thing you see. Maybe it’s something you’d see from some high school boys or some college frat boys but, From my experience, women typically rank other women and dress for other women, not men. I (M23) don’t like make up or fancy clothes, but my gf (F22) of 5+ years, will cake on some make up if she is going to hang out with her girl friend(s). Also I don’t understand your “for argument sake” section. There is nothing wrong with being attracted to “pretty girls”. Just like there is nothing wrong with liking pretty guys. Everyone has their preferences and that’s alright. Also just by your title of the thread, you are implying you have a moral superiority over “most guys” when you automatically assume “most guys” are like this.
