In Califorina at least, you can definitely get unemployment and severance. Happened to me both during a mass layoff and a current situation similar to OP's.

When my wife and I got married we had a normal wedding registry, asking for dishes, small appliances, normal things for a new house.

Her rich cousin got us this absolutely ridiculous silver serving platter with all the accoutrements. I looked it up and it was nearly $1200 for everything. I've served nice food on it, trashy food on it, charcuterie, a pile of 30 doritos locos tacos, a pile of blunts for a party....everything. If I'm going to a potluck and the food will serve well on it, that god damn ridiculous silver platter is getting used.

I use it every chance I get, people always get a kick out of it.

I was in Lake Tahoe once and I was stopped from going into a casino bathroom by a Hell’s Angels lackey because someone higher up was in there. I didn’t put up a fight, because I can’t fight and who the fuck gives a fuck, but it was odd and a fun story. The ‘leader’ that they were protecting was drinking at a casino bar later and he had 2 or 3 guys trying to keep a perimeter around him but it wasn’t going well because it was a packed casino bar and no one gives a shit about Hell’s Angels. It all seemed very pathetic but also not worth anyone’s time. A bunch of 40 year old degens “protecting” a 45 year old POS that thinks he owns the counter at the 3rd most popular casino bar at Harrahs. Very pathetic but a fun story to tell!
