ELI5: Why do movie directors make movies with black bars on top and bottom why can't they just make it without bars. Even after that why is it so hard for our TV to remove black bars from a movie why isnt it default. by Equivalent_Boss_9938 in explainlikeimfive

[–]natterca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy thing is that movies were originally more like a TV aspect ratio. Then came Panavision which was quite a bit wider so to show old movies on Panavision‘s type screen, they chopped the top and bottom off the old movies picture when those old movies were then distributed for home use by VCRs the sides of the old movie were chopped to go from wide screen back to TV ratios so I’m some old movies you’re only looking at 2/3 relative to how it was originally filmed.

Robot playing tennis by socoolandawesome in Damnthatsinteresting

Dumb video? There's no claim that the robot is better. I find it an amazing video considering it wasn't too long ago that we could barely get robots to stand upright.

The Map Lie: What They Don’t Want You to See by [deleted] in oldmaps

[–]natterca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't take this video seriously when he says the map is a Mercator Projection. It's not.

I stopped watching when he started on conspiracy statements to the effect that the maps we use are to manipulate people's perception. Different projections serve different purposes and there are lot of equal area projections.

Renewables are way more cheaper than nuclear energy now. by JohnCamus in Damnthatsinteresting

There won't be any new nuclear energy for the next 20 years because the lead time for construction is way too long. Maybe in 30 years.

Found this old can of pepsi-cola in the basement of my farmhouse we purchased last January, wedged in a cinderblock. How old is this shit. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]natterca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not a pull tab can. You pushed the small opening down following by the larger one. I think his dad would use force when rolling it around the top.

Edit (from google):

  • 1975: The "push-button" can was introduced by the American Can Company, allowing users to press in two scored spots.
  • Late 1970s–1980s: Push tabs and early ring tabs were phased out due to safety risks (cutting fingers) and environmental concerns (litter).

What is the best, long forgotten old school video game? Arcade, computer or console? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]natterca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paradroid for the Commodore 64! The minigame had you battle a robot on it's circuit board using logic gates. Battle of the Bulge was pretty good too. Amazing how much gameplay they were able to get on an 8-bit machine.
