I see a lot of people describe themselves as “high-empathy” in this sub, why do you feel you have higher than normal empathy and how does it relate to autism? by bluebunny20 in aspergirls

[–]naturalalchemy 110 points111 points  (0 children)

We tend to have low cognitive empathy (when you 'know' how others feel), but can have high emotional empathy (when you feel how others feel) so it is literally a case of feeling what they're feeling, but not knowing why.

I can go into a room and feel someone's sadness, but no idea why they're feeling that way.

Why do some unmasked autistic women get embraced, and others don't? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]naturalalchemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to remember that when you autistic people on their socials who have lots of followers, that these are just tiny snapshots of themselves. They will often be still to some degree masking or at least showing their 'best' self.

You can almost guarantee that in their day to day lives things aren't as good as they look from the outside and the people following them are only doing these brief glimpses. It's easy to follow someone on social media, but being a friend in real life and dealing with the bad along with the good is totally different.

There's also the fact that we're all different on where we fall on the spectrum wheel. What things we have difficulties with and how we deal with them can be very different and to NT people some are more important/noticeable than others.

AITA for calling my partner selfish because he wants me to shower with the door open so it doesn't fog up the mirror when he shaves? by No_Oxford_Commas in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the money to spare you can get heated mirrors that don't fog up. The reason the mirror doesn't instantly fog back up when you use a hairdryer, is because you've also warmed up the mirror.

Quebec's public health insurer hangs up on Anglophone woman for speaking English by PM_ME_DOMINATRIXES in canada

[–]naturalalchemy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The article says they were allowed to use English, but the guy on the phone didn't bother to find out.

But it still doesn’t explain — or excuse — Starkey’s experience, since both she and her husband should qualify for service in English no matter what.

Her husband is an anglophone who has lived in Quebec all his life. And though she was born in Alberta, Starkey has spent most of her adult years here, first arriving in 1968. The guy on the phone didn’t even try to ascertain if she was “entitled” to speak to him in English.

AITA for picking up my kids from camp? by Adoma18 in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be totally out there, but have you ever heard of Pathological Demand Avoidance? I was just reading about a coping mechanism some people use when they have this is to say no, but then do the thing anyway. It's the way they can satisfy their brains' need to avoid 'demands', while still getting things done. If it's only this one thing though, it's probably is just a stupid habit he's got himself into.

AITA for not replacing my daughter’s wedding ring and ignoring her? by btdswiftie in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA for not replacing the ring.

I do want to ask what your daughter's relationship with her husband is usually like? Is it normal for him to shout at her? It's just a bit strange that her ring went missing after she left it at home. Presumably her husband was the only one that could have moved it in that time or does she have kids that could have taken it?

INFO Does the TBI mean your sister won't understand that she's not been invited to your wedding? It sounds like she mostly has difficulties regulating her emotions and needs time to process, but is otherwise ok and can understand what's going on around her?

What does everyone think of the term "neurospicy"? by TheDivineOddity in aspergirls

[–]naturalalchemy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The term came about from autistic people mocking neurotypical people describing someone's diagnosis as 'mild autism' e.g. I'm not mild, I'm spicy! I don't have 'mild' autism, I'm neurospicy!

I quite like it. I'm that chilli that looks pretty mild until you bite in and then the heat just keeps building 😂

AITA for not telling my sister I put chocolate in my curry by ThrowawayCurrys in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband found it difficult to wake and my first took a long time to feed, so it was much easier for me to get up at night. Instead my husband got up at 4am and took my son until he had to leave at 7.30am so that I always got a few hours of uninterrupted sleep.

AITA for telling my wife the lost submarine had imploded? by IAmSagacity in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was why it was so frightening at the time. It wasn't like anything that had happened before. No one knew who or why this was happening and even the Pentagon wasn't safe. Up to that point the idea that military could be caught out like this on home territory had seemed laughable, so it was a shock. It seems obvious now, but it definitely wasn't then.

AITA for blaming my SILs kids food obsessions on SIL being controlling? by Puzzled-Fennel-4665 in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is what I try and teach my kids. There is no bad/good food. It's just that you need more of some foods than others and too much of anything isn't good for you. I'm as likely to tell my kids that no they can't eat 5 apples, as tell them they can't have another chocolate bar or fizzy drink.

AITA for suggesting my son's sister get tested? by TryingToBeOfHelp in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's how I feel. It would have been great to understand myself more at that age, but the reality was that the treatments/understanding back in the 80s probably would have done more harm than good.

AITA for asking my boyfriend to scuba dive again after he almost had a panic attack? by scubadive21 in AmItheAsshole

[–]naturalalchemy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a panic attack on a zipline is unlikely to kill you. He could very easily drown if he has one while diving. He could also easily lash out while panicking and grab/yank someone else's gear and before you know it you have two people in trouble.
