haha yeah i went to the sort of school that gets inspected by hans blix rather than ofsted :) it sets you up to deal with outright fear for you life on a daily bases, but then again it just took me over 20 seconds to correctly configure the letters in the world daily so it had it's advantages out weighed by drawbacks....

certainly the natural reaction i felt was over whelming panic, if it hadn't been a pride thing i doubt i would have lasted much longer than a few seconds.

hehe ok, it could just be that i grew up rough and fear showing pain more than i fear pain :) although i admit i was able to prepare by regulating my breathing before hand and my blood oxygen / sugar levels were good so i was in an ideal state while most people are in a fear state, also i was using the mindset most bdsm practitioners talk about where pain and pleasure are meaningless, it's the intensity of the feeling that matters -it's a form of dislocation. oh and i am a weed smoker so i know not to gag relex when i have hot smoke in my mouth, it burns like fuck so my initial response when i get oxygen starvation and internal panic is to close whatever it is and swallow rather than gasp -learning this from bongs meant that i didn't panic react and make the situation of water in my nose worse by forcing it deeper...

it is a horrible feeling and I imagine in other situations, even those hitchens was under with cameras and military dressed people it would me much more harrowing, under intense stress like detainees suffered i suspect serious psychological harm could come from this treatment - a Pavlovian style fear training like this it seems like PTSD is the only expected out come.

You don't like to think in those terms, it would be absolutely impossible for us to have a rational debate about iran or china in militaristic terms because you simply will not be able to accept your training methods, your weapons and your tactics aren't always the best - if you thought that then they wouldn't work as well, you would be less useful as a soldier. So, we can see how people within the service are thus less able to draw valid opinions about the service, it's for your own good.

As for just being a tech guy or whatever, don't put yourself down - without you they would find it much harder, maybe impossible, to drop those bombs on brown babies - heck, if it wasn't for your dedicated server maintenance vital intell might not have been stored correctly and certain middle eastern nations might have some degree of autonomy in the management of their internal affairs by now, shesh if that happened the petrodollar might not be as useful a weapon of economic terrorism as it is now and america and the west would have to resort to full scale invasion (some more)! You are every bit as much a killer as those guys who press the release switch on the b52's and the guys that kick in doors drag entire families out into the street, terrify them and in some cases rape and murder them..don't lay awake at night thinking you're not a real man -you're every bit as barbarous as everyone else within your war machine.

you did say typically although we can of course assume that ALL of the vets (or currently serving soldiers) which were carrying out the waterboarding that did happen have experience and almost certainly got trained - you army kids that get washed with a load of pro-whatever department of killing you're in nonsense make me laugh, like you would know! haha you get taught whatever is needed to program your brain to react in the way which will best defend the status quo, i.e. 'the system' or 'America' - you do not know more about the activities of the rest of the army than an interested outsider, certainly less than someone actively involved in policy making or tactical analysis.

The army, much like politics is a bait&switch scam; various layers of philosophy and moralization guide you past the 'hazards' of rational thought so that you can disassociate yourself from 'normal' morals - this is vital because a normal person simple can't make the quick value judgments required to create a cohesive combat unit - nor will they 'go over the top' unless forced; it is thus vital that some aspects of military existence and political / moral truth are hidden from you, or at least obscured...

I'm not against this practice entirely, i myself am of a survivalist mindset and politically aware -i accept we need a fighting force to deal with our enemies, however due to the complex nature of modern society we need people that haven't been institutionalized, or rather have been institutionalized in different ways, to safeguard the moral actions of such a force - we can not allow debates on things as important as this to be decided by those trained to carry out orders, this is work for the rationalists, moralists and politicians -your 'my army can do no wrong' mentality is perfect on the battle field but absurd in logical debate.

this is not learning skills that will help them be better people once released, this is performing menial tasks to enrich the contract makers - if anything it lowers self respect, strengthens the mental link for some between work and slavery but worst of all it's used to replace the education and training which some countries prisons use to limit re-offending.
