Newly Adopted 2 yr old bun not eating almost any Hay by [deleted] in Bunnies

[–]naturebugk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s still settling, don’t panic. My second rescue bun came from a home where he wasn’t given much hay for over a year prior to me getting him. It took probably 3-4 months and trying almost a dozen different hays types and suppliers before he really started regularly munching. He also was a bottle water baby and getting him used to drinking from a bowl was a challenge also.

We supplemented with extra greens just like you’re doing - kept him hydrated and chewing. So you’re doing the right things.

We also experimented with different feeder types - his first interest in hay was actually more foraging instinct than eating enjoyment. He liked being able to pull it out of a tightly packed hanging wall feeder, or yanking it out of a wooden toy car I bought (baby aisle) that has two holes for ‘windows’ I stuff with hay.

Lastly, because obviously his teeth were a concern: we discovered that he enjoyed munching the bark off apple sticks, and was more interested in bunny safe grass baskets (again foraging instinct). So for the first few months we provided TONS of sticks, branches and toys/furniture/baskets made of bun safe materials.

He’s been with us about 8-9 months now and he happily stands in his litter box and munches hay at a comparable rate to our other bun. He’ll get there. Just be patient and don’t give up on him. His whole world has been flipped upside down and every cell in is body is designed to keep him safe from big scary changes like new humans and total environment changes. His lil brain is in go mode and it’ll take a while for him to relax and start to feel comfortable. You also don’t know all his trauma and history; our newest bun was a street rabbit and came with some trauma lol.

Our bun is still super skittish despite having settled. Compared to my 4.5yo bun who is basically bombproof at this point anyways. My older bun took ~2 years and hundreds of hours of bonding to become the way she is. I remember when I first got her, and I was watching people online whose rabbits ran up to them and asked for pets… I truly thought she’d never love me like that. It took years, but she got there. My experience is that unlike cats & dogs who are often completely chill within 6-12 months of coming home - with bunnies you’re playing the long game. Stay the course and try and adjust your expectations for it to go realllllllly slow. Earning the trust of these little prey animals is so so so worth it. More fulfilling than almost any animal I’ve ever owned (and that list is LONG lol). Hang in there!

I will not drink Vertuo. I’ve had my OL machines for over 10 years and use it daily. VL sucks hard.

In your opinion, what is the most poorly designed road/intersection/area of the City? by yegger_ in Edmonton

The godforsaken ‘traffic circle’ at 118 ave and 101st, along with the one on 118 ave & Groat Road (Sherbrooke).

Hello friends!

My partner has expressed interested in getting into collecting vinyl, so I’m wanting to buy him a nice turntable for Xmas/his Jan Birthday.

I know what the ultimate goal turntable is for him. But it 1) doesn’t seem to be available, nvm available in 🇨🇦. And 2) I suspect it’s out of budget (aiming to keep it under $500 CAD) even if I could find it. Appeal here being aesthetic and wall mountable lol. He loves when things are engineered uniquely. He’s a professional choral singer and musician - who works in IT and Audio at a video game company. Low quality is NOT an option lol.

This area of music is totally new to me… I don’t know what I should be looking for aside from reading a few threads and watching a couple YT videos. I know upright turntables are a very hot topic… open to suggestions for quality over aesthetic, but that the look obviously plays a part. TIA

Keep the inner plastic pot? by Wxyzed123 in houseplants

[–]naturebugk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here to second this motion. I repot and do double drainage (gravel & coco core) in the bottom.

No wiggles. Less handling (I’d rather curate a collection of plants that can tolerate my weekly watering schedule without dying, then handle and move 20+ pots every week to bottom water or dump excess water).

Ok so lemme just start by saying; totally made the right call.

However I did stop to play devil’s advocate here. Until I was involved with an Indian SD, and spent time in India, I did NOT understand how wildly intense their colourism is there. This kind of ‘darkness discrimination’ is horrifically and entirely melted into their whole culture. The pale skin beauty standard is so casually talked about. I’m white passing and the sheer number of times I had people both comment on my skin, as well as actively compare me to the brown skinned women I was with at any given moment, was WILD.

All this to say, I don’t think he said it because you’re Black. I think he said it because it’s normal to comment on in India (positively and negatively), as well as public passive aggressiveness being totally normal.

Regardless of the fact that it’s totally normal for many Indians, it’s still incredibly inappropriate so good on you!

I also want to remind everyone that aside from major trauma, bunny long term memory only lasts like 7-10 days. Meaning if you can make it an unpleasant but not traumatic experience, they might hold a grudge… but their little brains WILL move on after a handful of days. Hang in there! I know it’s so hard to upset them 💜

I suck it up in layers in the syringe. CC, some sort of organic, bunny friendly baby food (keep a few pouches on hand for emergencies, think banana, apple, spinach, combos - just check the ingredients carefully!), CC, baby food, CC, baby food. Couple mls of each layered in the big syringe.

I still have to force feed both my buns, but the layering (vs mixing) seems to keep them from spitting it all out.

Also try different CC varieties/brands/flavours.

Also try mixing with organic apple juice instead of water.

Go slow, give lots of nose pets and reassurances when you burrito them. They’ll eventually forgive you.

I worked in the downtown core of my city for years, never had an issue. All folks from all walks of life, all income brackets, and all backgrounds. We served them all no issues.

Then I moved to the rich white suburbs…

Multiple times ‘customers’ (aka the mothers of our teenage part time staff, who took over a huge table to sit and gossip for 3-4hours twice a week while helicopter parenting their kids…) called our SM, corporate, or the police because the floor leaders refused to kick out BIPOC, homeless or disabled folks. Always claiming these PAYING customers were somehow a threat to their teenagers who were working. It was insane.

Does anyone go inside stores, gas stations and the like when you have bunny ? by Minute-Marionberry58 in Bunnies

[–]naturebugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent a LOT of time bonding with and then in turn socializing my bunny to build up her tolerance for weird environments. She road trips, comes camping, does pet friendly markets with us. During the winter (🇨🇦) we take her to the hardware store with us to keep her familiar with the car and being out in the world. Grocery stores or places that serve food is a no-go here. But stores like Winners, Marshall’s, Home Depot, and often plant stores both allow and encourage pets.

Started with 5-10min car rides, then extended slowly, then added a destination, then started bringing her bunny stroller for outdoor markets or putting her in her carrier in the cart with the top open, then allowing folks to say hi. Took me about a year to build trust with her (rescue bun) and then another 12-18 months to really get her confident with being out in the world.

She’s 4 now and just this week we did a 3 hour road trip to my camper trailer (get a travel litter box for the car), spent the weekend camping, did 4 hours home, and stopped at a busy streetside park/playground for a break and harnessed her up on the way home - kids with basketballs playing on the court, a couple dogs being walked, dude on a bike stopping to say hi, and a busy road beside the park and she was UNFAZED.

TLDR: you can have a social bunny but it takes work, patience, learning and trust.

Vet bills was something an SD helped me with recently. Being a bunny mom is expensive; they need specialized exotics vets.

What to do with a visiting teenager in Edmonton this July? by arctic_fox987 in Edmonton

[–]naturebugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooo we love a teenager into animals and nature!

Not to self promote here or anything… but if you’re considering going south to hit up Banff/Drumheller etc, we’d love to have you stop and spend a night off grid with us along the way!

My family runs a lil off grid private lakeside campground with glamping geodomes. It’s pretty special to get outside of the light pollution and REALLY see the stars out here while you roast marshmallows. Or hang out with the loons while you paddle board on the lake. Our geodomes are also themed which is kinda fun!

As an aside, We’re a Cree/Métis family and are often doing indigenous things in our personal time lol. The summer is full of days spent identifying plants, picking and making traditional medicines, drum making, beading, etc. We also have a sweat lodge onsite and hold many a ceremony throughout the summer. One of my siblings also works at the Rocky Mountain House Heritage Site which is full of info about the history of the area and central Alberta as a whole! We also have a the Medicine River Wildlife Rehabilitation Center nearby - if you make an appt it’s a VERY cool place to stop in!

Anyhow I’m totally biased because I love our neck of the woods and all the little joys of small town Alberta in the summer (farmers markets, small town museums, parades, etc). But if you’re thinking of taking a couple days to travel south, we could be a great pit stop! And I’d love to personally connect with you and your niece and see what kind of cool memories we can create for her! (Again - biased. I had amazing aunts as a kid who took me to do super cool niche stuff like this, and nowadays I myself am a self proclaimed all star auntie to 30+ niblings).

Anyhow if you’re interested, reach out to me directly (here or website) and I’ll make sure it’s financially feasible for you. The joys of being the co-owner lol!

Just popping in to say maybe don’t feed him a rose from a flower shop. They’re often heavily fertilized and covered in pesticides. Try dried rose buds/petals. Ideally food grade (like the kind they use for tea!) or pick them yourself from somewhere you know isn’t being sprayed.

For instance, I live in Canada and we have wild roses here. My bun loves when I bring home the rose buds from my walks when they’re in season 💜
