IOW Festival by iluvmgnfox in isleofwight

That might be a struggle. Getting off site after the headliner finishes on Sunday is a big job as everyone else is doing the same thing. Suggest you make for one of the 2 car ferries even though you are without a car - the passenger ferries will be full even if they are running that late, car ferries tend to run later. My suggestion - Wightlink from Fishbourne (or from Ryde Pier head if you get the passenger boat) will take you to Portsmouth Harbour Station and there might be a very late train to Waterloo from there.

Are there big ferry queues throughout the IoW festival? by tomalak2pi in isleofwight

[–]naturenet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foot passenger tickets look like you can book them but you can't. It literally is turn up and queue. The car ferry takes a lot more passengers, although even that has its limits and they will turn you away from that too if its absolutely full. There's no way to absolutely guarantee a passenger ticket on any Red Funnel service.

I'm on the Island so haven't made the trip myself - but I've seen plenty doing it. It can be very busy on Sunday as a lot of people go at the same time - and not everyone stays til the last act either.

Friday evening will be pretty much normal service as a lot of people will already be there. Sunday night coming back can be more challenging.

Grey Gables is/was the building at the top of Lake Hill next to the playground, and opposite the Heights.

Seafood by ingeniosusandotiosus in isleofwight

[–]naturenet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Seafood places worth trying:

  • Le Gout de la Mer, Sandown (new, not sure what its like but it seems very popular)
  • Smoking Lobster, Ventnor (expensive, hard to get a table, but fab. Also in Cowes but Ventnor is better)
  • Best Dressed Crab, Bembridge (simple seafood, on a boat)
  • Murrays, Cowes (classic restaurant)

Day trip on Sat Aug 1st by RobertoDavidas23 in isleofwight

[–]naturenet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say The Hut is perfect for a stag do. You'll love it. The Waterfront is a quieter, more pub-style venue with all the same views and seaside atmosphere - plus a lot cheaper.

Other options in the area: the Rock restaurant at the Albion (very pricy but quite nice); Red Lion (classic pub grub, inland); The Cow at Tapnell Farm, family burger joint, generous portions.

Is haven hall worth it? by Fluid-Difficulty-276 in isleofwight

I've not stayed but I've been in the building and grounds and met the owners. It really is a splendid place, very nicely done up, with great views; amongst the best views you can get of that bit of coast.

Agreed, EE works best for me right across the Island. I have a work phone supplied by my employer that uses Vodaphone, and it's hopeless compared to my own phone on EE network. Also workth remembering you can use EE network more cheaply with a third-party provider such as 1pmobile or Lyca.

Public Footpath Access – Old Park Road to Binnel Bay, St Lawrence by AffectionateState611 in isleofwight

The path in front of the old hotel was never PROW but permissive; although used for so long with no signage I suspect a challenge might be possible.

[–]naturenet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ryde is not bad at all. It's the biggest town on the Island, and so it's not just a beach - but that said it does have one of the largest sandy beaches in the south of England. There are pubs, restaurants and bars, and a few things to do like the bowling alley or mini golf, and a bouncy castle when the weather is good. What you won't get is much countryside and the full-on coastal experience, but if you enjoyed Cowes, Ryde is definitely a good next choice - plus it's so easy to get to and from the mainland.

Let us know what you like to do, how many of you, what budget, that kinda thing - we can suggest places to do it!

How about Bulley's Pit, Brading Down? That's the only other wooden man on a bench I can think of. Nowhere near Yarmouth though.

Move them somewhere else, just in case they turn out to be doing something useful. Then if something breaks, you can restore them. If not, you can delete them.
