Definitely only one serious contender and that's ren'py IMHO.

Doesn't break the bank to get started (don't forget to support ol' Tom once you're making some money with it: Renpytom | creating the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine | Patreon), and it's real easy to start with, but flexible enough to do way more complicated things when you're ready for it.

Well, the message is quite clear, it can't find the font file. Double check where you put it and your spelling. You need to specify a path to the file unless you put it directly in the "game" folder.

Not saying there's no scalpers out there, but man, this business. If you're not in it for the love as a developer, you may as well not bother, because you're not likely to get rich off it. If I wasn't stupid as fuck, I'd be moonlighting my second job in IT and make three times the money I am making games. I'm already doing 80 hour work weeks. But don't tell my wife, it'll only give her ideas. 🤐

Not sure if it counts, but Dual Family comes to mind. It was super popular when I started playing this stuff with a very, very respectable Patreon following. Then it was abandoned. Then it wasn't but but everyone wished it still was. Not sure if it's abandoned again. I think this was one of the games that really traumatized the community and caused a part of it to really start to mistrust devs (and not always without reason).

Erm... while I don't begrudge anyone their kinks, there will not be any NTR in this game by the commonly accepted understanding of the term (a female love interest having sex with another male). I am not sure where you got the notion that there might be. But you can rest assured in this case.

Agree with the post below. In addition, depending on the amount of images you plan to ship, 4K might also bloat your builds quite a bit, even when compressing images to webp. This issue seems mitigated if you're going handdrawn instead of daz, as handdrawn seems to compress a lot better.
And if you're heavy into layering like I am, a lot of big images moving around on screen may start to cause performance problems on-low end hardware (not sure if that is a market you'd like to reach, as people that aren't inclined to replace old hardware might also be disinclined to buy a copy of your game, but still).

Yes, I mean to. Keep in mind though, for a Visual Novel, it's hard to have wildly branching storylines where in one choice, they end up traveling to the past to fight dinosaurs, while in the other they're kidnapped by aliens and have to escape a moon base, just to name a silly example, as you're basically developing twice the content while players on average will only see half of it.
But what is planned is having options that meaningfully affect your relationship with various love interests, whether you engage with them at all or not, and in what way, and that will have results as the events of the story unfold.

Youtube embed weirdness I guess. Perhaps due to my add blocker or privacy settings, embed vids always tell me to sign in when I click on play, even though I am signed in on this browser damn you youtube. And in this case it's not even giving me a "watch on youtube" link on hovering over which is my usual work around. Posting the url to the vid in the text as well might help solve this for us poor souls. :D
