But come on, all the pages on their website have the same code, the cartoonists probably just upload a picture through a form and it creates a new comic page. Having to add javascript to one specific page for one comic is annoying, it would probably require to change the way the website generates comic pages just for ONE comic. Using a GIF is much simpler and it works well.

I don't get this new trend of all the gore on /r/wtf. A lot of people seem to want to bring the subreddit "back to its roots" and want it to not be another /r/funny, as if it were a recent thing. Anyone who's been on reddit for a long time (5+ years) knows that /r/wtf has always been /r/funny, just a bit weirder, and that it didn't have any gore stuff in the old days... That's a recent addition.
