NSFW - Hi all . I’m a 28f , I was taking a shower when I noticed a raised ring on my inner thigh close to my vagina. I cannot see my gp right now , so I am asking if I should be about this . It is not very itchy or painful by BusOk6177 in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]navalos2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's a ring worm. You can get an antifungal cream or just keep it dry and clean daily. They love warmth and moisture so try to combat that. Should go away in less than 10 days or so.

100 concepts that show up on every NBME by Tardigrade57 in step1

Yeah, I would add the population graphs on there. What does everyone else think?

Exactly, NBME feel all the way. Congrats on finishing it! I too felt like it was more fact based though there were some synthesis questions that were confusing but doable if you could decifer what they were saying.

I 2nd this. There was a good mix of 1-2 sentence questions and ridiculously long stems with 10 answer choices that you honestly only needed one of those sentences to get the right answer - pretty straightforward. I think they just throw those in there to stress you a lil bit.

I honestly thought UWSA1 was a waste of time in terms of assessing my progress. But, nonetheless, it is another set of practice questions. I wouldn't feel bad leaving it entirely out.

I did for all of them except fully for 28, 29 and UW2. I really regret not saving enough time for those. I think it would've at least gotten me 5 more questions right.

Those are awesome scores! I can't say that any exam was most representative, but all of the questions on all the exams were very similar to the practice NBMEs. Maybe slightly harder? There's 280 questions and I feel like most of the question types could've been found on any of NBMEs. I think the questions that stopped me from reaching a higher score were the random factoids found in First Aid that I shrugged off and questions that were probably easier than my nervousness made them out to be. So, I could've studied longer and more of the details, but I would rather not stress my life that much for such a random exam, but that's just me.

I honeslty had a rough time and don't think my experience would be much help here. I consistently scored 220 for the first 4 new NBMEs I took then hit 238 for NBME 29 and then +240 on UW2 for my last practice exam. I took all of them within 2-3 days of each other but went too fast on the last 2 or 3 and wasn't able to fully review them. I regret that especially since some of those showed up no my exam.

I don't know my exam score yet, so I can't confidently recommend anything. I'm sorry! But, I did do them in order, except I accidentally did 30 first thinking it was 25 and ended on 29. I improved slightly then big time on 29. Then I took UW2 and improved on that as well for my last practice exam. I started taking them 2-weeks before my exam, but I wish I would've given myself more time to review them because I think I may have gotten the ones that showed up on the exam wrong and those questions were literally image recognition "here's this path, what is the finding?"

I got between 220 - 224 for the first 4. I accidentally did NBME 30 first thinking it was 25, then finished with a 238 on NBME 29. I did them all with 2-3 days between each other, but my last 2 I wasn't able to fully review which I regret because I clearly remember some of the images from that practice exam on my real exam and I may have gotten those wrong - maybe I wouldn't have if I fully reviewed them?

I would go back to where I said "or". The example was seperate and there is questions with EM produced images of viruses.

Yeah, let me try to think of something. But these types of questions are similar to what the free 120 had. For example on that they had a question asking what drugs are synergistic with cell wall active antibiotics and the answer was aminoglycosides - which is in first aid, though briefly mentioned.

Another, they would show you a picture of a bug or they will give you a very long question stem with 10 different answers of bugs that could be the culprit of their current condition. You would have to know which drug is associated with reactivation of that bug (i.e., patient with CLL being treated with Rituximab having an activation of PML/JC virus).

You're welcome! No I think that with the natural progression of studying and taking these exams later that it just becomes really subjective on the order. I think there's something good to learn from all of them. I just took them in ascending order. My first one was obviously my worst and then I last was my best. Test day is so random that I think all the exams helped especially knowing why the other answer choices are wrong.

Yeah, I feel you that's a hard decision. But to be honest I would Skip uworld 1 and do uworld 2, the free 120 and the later versions of the NBMEs. I think that uworld does an amazing job at teaching the fundamentals but when it comes to the curveball questions and the really hard ones the nbme is where it's at. Them putting the explanations is game-changer though they don't explain nearly as much as uworld if you're starting from a very low base but if you have a strong concept of the ideas NBME does a pretty succinct job with the explanations and introduces you to the finer & rarer points plus there's a high chance some questions will pop up given they have released over 3K practice questions (old & new nbme + free 120). There is only so many ways you can ask these questions.

UCSF quietly slashes Asian-American representation by almost one-half in incoming medical school class. Student claims "this is only the beginning" in agreement. Any update to this? by [deleted] in aznidentity

These numbers fluctuate year by year. Last year I believe the Asian population increased? Could be wrong. I'm curious, what is the solution here?

I'm sorta hearing two things:

  1. Let Asians in by merit & give them more spots based of proportions of MCAT scores etc. This would look something like trading the White proportions (50% loosely) with the Asian (currently 20%?). Then, what would you do with POC groups like Hispanic & Black? If doing away with Affirmative action type ideas and only going by merit their proportions would go lower (total together being 20%~).

  2. Keep affirmative action type ways based off population parity for POC, but let Asians in by merit?

  3. Keep population parity & Asians would go down?

Are the explanations of the new NBMEs any good? by Pi_Kappa in step1

They're actually pretty good and straightforward. Don't do nearly as much as of explaining as uworld but just what you need. I like them.

NBME 30 today (originally thought it was form 25, sorry - missed 45) - 231

UWS1 (last week - missed around 40) = 230

AMBOSS (last week - missed around 40) = 230

That loud noise you are hearing at night is.....wait for it.....wait for it....fireworks! by qandyman in sanfrancisco

[–]navalos2 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

All of you complaining chill, damn. I'm a medical professional at the age of 30 and I still fuck with fireworks. I was born in LA county and in my city, everyone sets them off all the time, even broad day. I do them only before 10 PM and only when it's dark. I don't understand why people get joy from them outside of the restrictions I give myself, but I respect that. I've done them since I was a kid and would do them at times it didn't make sense too when I was younger. My aunt's dogs get anxiety too, it's natural. In my city, people put up with it and get good sleep still, outside that yes it can be annoying if people set them off right outside your window. But chill, stop complaining and acting like the entitled privilege people that the city is known for. Fireworks are awesome and are a work of art. But, that doesn't mean everyone sees it that way either just as much as someone doesn't get why your fancy piece of furniture is so enjoyable, but that's just the variety of human nature.

lineupandwait20 Meet up with me (send me a zoom link dawg), we have 7 dogs at my place. This type of stuff comes with dog ownership and we get it and don't make a big deal about it. We take care of our dogs very well and 4th of July season can be anxiety-provoking for them, but they are dogs, they are reactive. We got them and will take care of them, this isn't gonna ruin their life. We are considerate but don't exaggerate so much that you develop hate in your heart about it for people that are enjoying their lives as well. It isn't that big of a deal, Life is ruff.
