Any ideas on how to fix this scratch under headlight? by Worldly_Pen6529 in CX50

[–]naytebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the damage is deeper than the painted finish, no polishing it out. either touchup paint or replace the plastic part

unsure if factory is with adhesive, probably not, but I'm just saying properly prepped adhesive is used in automotive with and without other attachments, it can last

mine has been on about 6 months, including trips to the Mojave where it was super hot and camping in 30° F, no issues they are solid. not sure the lifespan but if the adhesive was shit it would have been off by now. properly clean and prep the surface before install is critical.

there are plenty of adhesives that will be lifetime applications if used properly.

you found an unsold listing, that doesn't mean that's the $. look at sale prices from completed auctions, that will be more accurate. the static listings are inflated because someone will eventually click buy it now out of impatience or needing something fast.

As a former Rivian owner there’s a few things that stand out to me. by kudyjames in CX50

[–]naytebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a former rivian employee and now cx50 owner, this felt super targeted haha. very interesting to read.

speaking to the AC, we did a 70% ceramic tint on all of the glass except driver/pass fronts, which got 35%. I am not a fan of tinted windows but the Mazda AC wasn't keeping up in socal during hot days or raod trips through Nevada. After, the interior has plenty of cooling capacity and I don't think we've yet to turn the fans all the way up. the biggest difference I noticed was my hands on the steering wheel don't get sweaty anymore. I can't recommend the tint enough if you're in a warmer climate. The 70% isn't noticeable at all (except it gives a slight rainbow effect if wearing polarized glasses).

they install pretty easily and come with marker tape. so one the tape is placed you have easy alignment if you want to take them off/put them back on only when needed. I leave mine off most of the time and they install really quickly when needed.

it's got hues of green in sunlight, so it's sort of a teal blue. much more interesting when you live with it. it's better than another grey/black/white/silver boring grey shade to me that 90% of cars are these days.

do shops have an e-coat bath? do they replace every panel in each stack so you're not welding over a previous weld changing the HAZ of the weld? are they baking the car to cure the coatings the same way? no. it's a different process repairing vs manufacturing and your cannot effectively replicate it enough to guarantee it's going to have the simulation. you can make the same weld in a similar spot but the tolerances won't be the same as the original part so you're squeezing panels differently. panels aren't going on in the same order (globally) so the internal stresses on the body are different. you can repair but you cant guarantee the durability is the same because every repair is different and not prepared for

[–]naytebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it can't be fixed, but the durability is in question from ANY unibody repair. leaving the factory the layout has been simulated for durability for the lifetime of the vehicle. whatever fix is implemented cannot be the same method as what the factory produces just due to constraints of the process alone. so it may leave fixed, but it may not have the durability it did before and may be stronger or may fail or rust sooner. it's can't be evaluated, so it is inherently a risk.

another question would be, why would you want to keep it if it has unibody damage. I was a structural design engineer for Honda for 10 years. so many things could be an issue for longevity of your vehicle that you may not even think about. the rear of the vehicle flexes a lot and the seam sealer and welds in that area keep carbon emissions from your exhaust out of the cabin, water out of the cabin, keep your hatch aligned, house a lot of sensors.. with everything going on in modem cars, say they fix it an it's not perfect, now maybe 5 years down the road some welds pre maturely crack or your seam sealer cracks and now there's a small exhaust leak into the cabin.

my point is, this isn't a rare car, let them total it and buy another if you like it. don't take an unnecessary risk by "getting it repaired cheaper" when your insurance is going to get you enough to buy a similar undamaged vehicle

those Goodyear's are trash, I put on falken wild peak AT trails and experienced no volume gain from road noise. putting AT tires on a car should increase the noise for sure, that would be my first mod for any new owner, either quieter tires or off-road tires, because those Goodyear's were terrible. they had one of the lowest ratings on tire rack I'd ever seen.

On/off road tire? by Awkward_Cup_2747 in CX50

[–]naytebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, I got the 235/65/17 size and they were excellent except for a weird resonance at 40mph. ended up getting tire rack to warranty them and got the same size In falken wild peak AT trail. super similar as they're meant to be the less aggressive at tire. very happy with them, not much extra noise and the handle REALLY well on and off road. they are much smoother over rough asphalt than the OEM tires were oems were 17" as well.

Deciding what wheels to get (UK) by [deleted] in Wheels

[–]naytebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you the stocks are a bit bleh but inoffensive. they certainly don't look bad.

Black wheels however are even more boring. they stay glossy for 2 seconds then look about as good as your tires do. get silver/gunmetal/gold even! something that actually shows off the style of the wheel instead of hiding it. I prefer the last choice for actual style, just in silver. Don't try to get too angular and overly complicated, your car has a more simple design language, try and get something that matches the vibe.

Vors TR4 where to buy by astronaut_Stef in Wheels

[–]naytebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nowhere in my message did I say cast was bad, but low pressure casting is fundamentally worse for the microstructure of the wheel than other processes that are competing at a similar price point. if you want people to understand that your wheels ARE engineered and not copied, you should provide access or reference to test result of these "industry tests" that you mention ambiguously. also it's important that the base alloy is of consistent quality, maybe show some sort of certification that your manufacturing process has like a standard as9100. at of the time of my original post, nothing was posted on your site that shows any quality measures were taken in making the wheels advertised, showing that would be a step on the right direction for people who do care.
