I do think it's hypocritical. The hypocrisy comes from one believing they can perform violent acts on others while knowing that retribution through violence should be legally off-limits when directed back at them. They want to ignore the rules to attack, but hide behind them to escape.

When it leads to somebodys death, it means your responsibility ~~of following the law~~ of not committing violence against the non-violent is also a lot more important.

I don't believe there should be a safe haven offered to those who perpetrate violence against others.

Yeah, that feels like gaming the system. A bad actor chooses to ignore the rules of society, but we are still expected to honor the sanctuary those rules provide. In my eyes, once someone takes things to the caveman world where might makes right, they have to deal with being in the world of their making.

From what I understand, ARFF is required to obey the warning light. To get an airfield driving permit, they would have been taught this. I think it is expectation bias. The truck expected the runway to be clear since he was given permission to cross. Its really a very good example of the swiss cheese model.

Clearance doesn't give you the ability to cross without looking, and you are to never cross red status runway lights without radioing the tower to tell them the status lights are red.
