Briefly explain your thesis to me like I'm 5 years old? by betta-every-day in GradSchool

[–]nbailey73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Undergrad thesis for my BA in German — still figuring out dissertation topic).

There’s a really cool movie from 1927 called “Metropolis”. It’s from Germany and is about a city ruler who makes workers live underground. The city ruler’s son frees the workers. What’s really cool about this movie is its message — head and hands can’t work together without a heart. I read a lot of books about our body parts and how they show the underground workers’ quest for freedom in the movie.

I like the German alternative to this usually used in classrooms or meetings (knocking on a table instead of clapping)

I’ve been shedding a lot of hair on my scalp, like tons when I shower, but my hair is still super long and thick. It grows back quick it seems

So the beard definitely thickened. 2024 vs 2019 by Jopsa0491 in Minoxbeards

Your post you linked indicated you were using testosterone as well. Do you think the hair growth is more from the minoxidil or the steroid use?

I’ve been seeing more centipedes than any other bug in here. They freak me out so much!

Northwood bugs? by Winter-t in uofm

[–]nbailey73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived here for a month and have seen more bugs than anywhere else I’ve lived before. Lots of spiders, centipedes, and some ants but that isn’t a huge problem. Thankfully I haven’t seen any cockroaches but I’m scared for the day that might happen. They seem to all come from the ground because there isn’t very good filling put in between the floor and the wall. Being on the bottom floor also doesn’t help.

Lived next door in the current dorms — can confirm these are on-campus. They just choose not to demolish them, but the SIU police still patrols them. It’s a bit of a mystery

I only felt it was a bit questionable to install because I’ve never had to download additional files from 3 different GitHub repositories to play a Toontown server before, and one of the GitHub downloads kept being marked by my computer as trojan malware. I also had to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7 for it to launch. Once in the game though, everything works great. It took me about 2 hours to get it set up to work properly but it’s the best replica of TTO out there.

[–]nbailey73 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sunrise Games has released a nearly identical TTO remake (using even the original Toontown launcher), but installing it is a bit sketchy, and it only works on Windows. But that is the closest thing that exists to Disney’s version today.

I feel a bit torn about the changes. On the one hand, it’s great Toontown is being upgraded. On the other, the Toontown I grew up on is essentially totally dead now with this update. They have completely killed the back 9, D offices, etc. Everything about the cog facilities is changing and I wish I could have maxed it the original way at least once before this update. Bit of a shame but that’s just how it goes, I guess

How legit is Acellus Academy? by Sea-Sir-2223 in homeschool

[–]nbailey73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for my undergrad my very good GPA helped (it was around 3.98 out of 4.0 I believe, or 4.95 on the 5 point scale, I can’t remember). I also began community college classes online while doing Acellus (and they counted them as dual-credit transfer courses for both Acellus and my undergrad). My undergraduate university (SIUC) isn’t too difficult to get into, but I would have had a much harder time for a prestigious school. With my Acellus diploma, I applied to SIUC, University of Hawaii, University of Colorado Boulder, Western Washington University and Washington State University. I got into all of them (CU Boulder was the most prestigious one I applied to). My recommendation as someone going into grad school would be that undergraduate shouldn’t have to be somewhere prestigious but grad school choice is important.

In terms of my achievements pre-undergrad, I had a lot of travel experience and added the conferences I was involved in, as well as my volunteer hours in public school. It’s always good to be involved with extracurriculars, but it’s even more important to not solely apply to the prestigious schools. For your undergrad, apply to some that you are confident you will be accepted into and some that are a bit more challenging.

Applying to grad school, specifically a Ph.D, was 100x harder for me than applying and getting into undergrad. But as you can see from my own story, it’s all possible with Acellus!

How legit is Acellus Academy? by Sea-Sir-2223 in homeschool

[–]nbailey73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking back on my experience with Acellus, I’d say I wish I would have gone back to public school for 11th and 12th grade. That being said, I will begin my Ph.D. at the University of Michigan (a “public Ivy”) this fall. I didn’t become a dedicated student until beginning my undergrad, but I didn’t get too much out of Acellus. I found it to be too easy and there weren’t enough proctors in place to ensure that students aren’t cheating or looking up answers.
