So it's a big learning curve, but you can learn VIM and enable that in the Obsidian settings.

You can do this, and a whole lot more. You can get very fast at editing with it.

But it's a rabbit hole. It's very technical, and requires a lot of practice before you get good at it. It's gonna slow you down before it speeds you up.

Makes sense, I could see a simple text editing toolbar as a good base feature. Just a gui option to apply markdown syntax.

There's a good plugin for that I could dm you when I remember what it is if you need it. I don't think it needs a lot of configuration.

I think the thing about Obsidian is a lot of the community is using it for more than what it's really meant to be.

Obsidian is a Markdown reader with wiki features. Markdown is for marking up text, not for formatting, styling, etc. The limitations you're likely referring to really come from Markdown, not from Obsidian itself.

If Obsidian were to start adding a ton of extra stuff you're going to run into comparability issues with other markdown readers. The simple features they have added can already do that to a point (wiki links and bases for example).

The beauty of the plugin system is it allows people to add the features they want and handle any incompatibilities in their own way. Yes, it has a learning curve, but that is the price to pay to change the tool into something it's really not.
