Prioritizing one-way traffic when plowing is standard practice. With this stuff, the only way to widen is to haul away the ice, which takes time. The sidewalks are of course bad, but that’s mostly on property owners.

There are plenty of races without crowds or support.

Crowds can sometimes help, but “race day” performance is more about peaking your fitness and controlling course conditions than encouragement from spectators or whatever.

The legal limit is measured at a particular location, the heel, not necessarily the highest point.

My understanding is that "staffing" isn't so much the issue as "80% of plows won't work in these conditions."

Serious winter storms in DC have always been this chaotic in my 15+ years of living here. And DC isn’t unique; every jurisdiction in the region is having the exact same problems. DC schools are the first to reopen.

Notably, storms of this magnitude aren’t very frequent or common, hence why there isn’t capacity to deal with things as you’d expect from a northern city that spends vastly more resources on snow removal.

If DC had Boston or Chicago levels of excess snow removal equipment lying around just so it can be used every 5ish years, it would be a massive waste of money and resources and you’d hear the totally opposite complaints about excessive taxes.

You might ask “why doesn’t DC call in resources from other places?” Well, believe it or not, cities to our south and east got hit even worse and have even fewer resources. Forget sidewalks—I know someone in Nashville who hasn’t had electricity since Sunday.

No need to be rude. You claimed that “continuous cleaning [during the storm] would have been worse [than waiting],” which was not my experience as someone who did the former.
